Cannot install the game - Battle.net prompts me to buy it

Hi,

I tried installing Warcraft 3: Reforged recently and I was surprised by being unable to. Battle.net does not recognize I own the game. By accessing my Games & Subscription section of my Battle.net account, Warcraft 3: Reforged is listed as Active on its status. It shows I last played it on December, 2022. But on the application, it prompts me to buy it, as if I didn’t own it.

I tried reaching out to technical support, but the buffoon who replied sent me a connection problem page. Once I complained he hadn’t read my ticket, he told me to “just install the game”, closed the ticket, and told me to seek help at the forums if I had further issues.

I never expected to get such an unprofessional response from Blizzard’s support. It used to be absolutely brilliant.

But perhaps there are others who have faced this issue before, and have found a fix? Hopefully someone here will be able to tell me something useful.

As long as your RoC CD key is registered in your Battlenet account, you can play the standard mode of WC3R.

To install it:

  • Log out of the launcher
  • Click the cog icon in the upper right of the log in window
  • Select Continue without logging in
  • Buy button will change to Install
  • Once install starts you can log back in to the launcher in the upper right

That’s likely due to you submitting the ticket under the wrong category. Thus, you received the standard templated reply for that category.

I suspect you’re not representing what was said.

I had submitted it under the “Install or patch problem”. Couldn’t find anything more fitting.

I’ll copy paste the reply, since I can’t post a screenshot.
"Howdy

To install Classic WC3 you will have to install WC3 Reforged on the battle.net app, once this is installed launch the game and it will allow you to play the classic version.

If you have any issues with this reinstall the bnet app and change your password. Finally, if this doesn’t help please reach out to the forums to report a bug."

I said “just install the game” to simplify. I cannot install the game, which was why I had contacted support, and he told me to… install the game.
Changing my password obviously does not make sense, either.

I also have Warcraft 3 Classic, which I downloaded from the website, but I wanted it on the Battle.net app as well, as I had before. The ticket was, however, about Warcraft 3 Reforged being unrecognized as purchased on the app.

I will attempt the method you’ve suggested. Thank you.

That does seem like the correct ticket category.

For the second response, if you used the word “classic” in the ticket, the GM probably assumed you meant Classic mode within Reforged. It can help to specify that you want to know how to install the game using only a registered CD key.

That version won’t appear in the launcher as it was superceded by Reforged a while ago. When installing, the same Reforged client is installed for everyone. The difference is what is accessible:

  • CD key = Classic mode only. Reforged mode is locked.
  • Reforged license = Classic mode and Reforged mode are unlocked.

Right. To update the situation, I was able to install Reforged using the method you suggested. Thank you.

And for clarifying, I have both the classic CD key-based game and Reforged. It is listed as an Active Status license on my account. The Battle.net app just wasn’t recognizing it for some reason.

My support ticket was about Reforged. I also asked about whether Classic was no longer available on the app, and how I could download it if not. Support was not helpful. You were.

This exact scenario happened to me. Support unhelpful, but found this forum post. These steps are the perfect workaround. Blizz, hire this man!

To install it:

Log out of the launcher
Click the cog icon in the upper right of the log in window
Select Continue without logging in
Buy button will change to Install
Once install starts you can log back in to the launcher in the upper right

Hi, may I have some help regarding installation of ROC and FT class CD key-based games onto my Mac?

In my Battlenet account, I can see my keys as proof of my ownership of these 2 games. However, the button for Warcraft III: Reforged is set to “Buy” instead of “Install” for me. I cannot install and play my class mode without paying for Reforged.

Sent my query to Support and they asked me to refer to https://support.blizzard.com/article/000256212. I tried the Downloader provided, but it gave an error message titled ““Downloader” needs to be updated.” and details “The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of macOS. Contact the developer for more information.” I believe this has got to do with the Downloader being 32-bit.

So now I am kind of stuck: must pay for Reforged even when I just wanted to play the classic mode, and installation outside of Battlenet is not feasible. Any solution is deeply appreciated! Thank you!

please read the thread you’re replying to, as the solution has already been given:

  1. Log out of the battle.net app.
  2. At the login screen, click the cog button above and to the right of the username and password fields and click “Continue without logging in”
  3. Navigate to the Warcraft III page in the battle.net app. The button will change to “Install.”
  4. Once you initiate the install process, you can log back in.

This happens because you don’t own Reforged; But once you have the game installed, it will check for the key and see that you have it. Note that only the RoC key is actually required. The TFT key alone cannot be used to play.

These steps are only required to install the game using a Classic RoC key. If you purchase Reforged, this doesn’t happen.
