Can someone explain why it's illegal to say Grom now?

It started in Warlords of Draenor and now this game is full of awkward voice cuts to replace when someone says Grom with Hellscream. It feels so crap especially from Thrall who is close to Grom. Imagine if Arthas would refer to Jaina as Proudmoore the entire time.

I heard that it might be due to some legal crap but i didn’t find an offical Blizzard statement about this.

I saw somewhere that supposedly there is a type of motorcycle called Grom that blizzard didn’t want to get into a copyright issue with

Hmm, I call doubt.

they probably can’t trademark or copyright the name grom while they can grommash so they want everyone to forget that everyone used to call him grom.

“Furion” is completely gone from the Night Elf campaign too. Tyrande always has the parts where she calls him by his name cut out.

It’s bizarre and completely unnecessary.

I don’t think it has anything to do with the vehicle. The Honda Grom was produced in 2014. Grom Hellscream, as an entity, has existed for much much longer.

I’m overly curious too. Honda Grom has nothing to do with it I’m sure.

they tried to change thrall’s name several years ago but eventually backed off because everyone hated the name go’el

Likely to solve the writing issue that two people who are close and speaking to each other do not go around mentioning their names all the time. This works in books to keep track of who is speaking to who but in cutscenes there are other tools one can use to infer this information.
