5 Necessary features in a new RTS

I’m not going to talk about the UI or graphics but the core features that would greatly enhance the gameplay.

-Add the option to zoom out more, the base game is fairly zoomed in, a lot of people find this uncomfortable or unpractical. Let players choose how much zoom they want.
-Custom keybinding is absolutely necessary in a RTS, i believe starcraft2 did this well, it would be nice to do the same for warcraft reforged, once again, let players choose how they play.
-Ability to reconnect to a game, in case of crash or disconnection, like on almost all recent multiplayer games. (Especially necessary for custom maps where crashes happen a lot).
-Add the option to select 20 units or more. A lot of custom maps need this, but it could also be useful in melee maps.
-More stability so that custom games don’t crash (more memory ?). Crashes happen a lot especially on big maps.

  • for increased MAX ZOOM
  • for more robust Keybind interface, hopefully with profiles (rts profile, moba profile, td profile etc.)

of course reconnect is a must i would say

“Add the option to select 20 units or more”

I’d love to play the game with this feature!

I agree with all but the zooming. The close up way of playing was a clear development choice back in the day. Comming forth from two concerns:

  1. The scale of what PC’s could render at that time. This is the reason supply went from 40-50, 70-80 and to 100.
  2. It was meant to make the battle a lot more personal in scale. Zoom out to much and the player becomes disconnected from the happenings.

So please don’t zoom out to much, we all want to see the nitty gritty details of an Archmage being chopped up by the Blademaster :sunglasses:

about the custom map crashes.
This is quite litterally because some map makers had to “hack” into your system RAM in order to access more RAM as the war3 engine allowed. And of course this was not the most “stable” solution.

It’s actually scary (from a security PoV) that this was possible over so many years.

WC3 isn’t an RTS, its an RTS-RPG hybrid, you dont need to zoom out into space.

They should add offline support like the original.

If they are able to let you reconnect to the game they are Gods, I have zero expectations of this. In SC2 you can resume from replay so something like that might be possible for competitive matches.
Remember they are not working from scratch and the engine has its limitations, I also realy want that if its possible though

No. Keep the mechanics the exact same. It will ruin the game(might also lower the skill ceiling) if you can zoom out too much or control bigger groups.

I’m not talking about a huge zoom out by default, just an option for those who want to zoom out like 10-20% more. As for the control groups, it’s absolutely necessary for custom maps, and i think it could be great for melee as well, it’s nothing gamebreaking, it could remove a bit of difficulty but it’s difficulty that was artificially created through a flawed mechanic, a cap this small (12 units) on control groups is unnecessary.

Is this a new RTS? That’s the first question we should ask ourselves

Thinking that WC3 was a flawless game is just silly. These are all good suggestions the OP gave. None of these will “ruin the game”. Keeping everything the exact same will ruin the game.

It’s up to the devs whether or not they will do a good job, but that’s not something you can control.

It’s not a new RTS.
I’m surprised that some people even want bs like this.

Never said it was flawless I made a statement… Not an opinion

Agree with all, would even suggest the unit selection cap be unlimited.

Agree with all but zoom (in competitive games).

The less zoom, the easier to play (as long as your resolution and fine motor controls can cope). If you allow unlimited unzoom, you’ll have people playing with the full map on their screen, and they’ll be much faster than those using the minimap. But the less zoom, the less pretty it is. So competitiveness leads to less prettiness.

Custom maps should definitely be able to control the limits though, including all the way out if the engine can handle it.

I think the added widescreen support and the smaller UI will be enough to make the game feel less zoomed in and custom keybindings were confirmed in an interview with Grubby so you can rest easy on that one.

I absolutely agree with needing reconnects, better stability and higher unit selection for at least custom games.

These would alter melee/ladder a bit too much.

I believe you can right now but it’s not super built-in, if I recall correctly. Might involve going into a text file or whatever using an editor.
