Tips for a beginner?

Hello,

I am just getting into SC and I am a bit overwhelmed. Not only am I horrible at the game, but some SC streamers that I’ve watched play the game so fast, use all sorts of shortcut buttons (I think) etc.

What are some key button set ups that could make me play as fast as well? It appears that they have key binds for almost everything, which helps them jump around the map, quickly control units, build things etc.

Any help will be appreciated!

Normal your looking at 1- 4 for unita 5-0 for buildings but it depends on what race your playing and some players will transition the buildings to units for controling a larger army. F2 -f4 are camera hot keys which some players use to jump to bases and rally points during the game. As for basic shortcut/hotkeys depends on the person.

Personally i play on default hotkey setup. Also how you do your control groups will also be a personal decision too. I play 1-3 units 4-6 for hatcheries. Otherwise just having where your keys are memorized while playing will help you get faster as you play more.

Edit: you can also hit control group number twice to jump to that control group.

Thank you for your reply!

I’m currently playing Terran only. Do you have any tips for them specifically as well?

How much of a beginner are you?
Playing the single player campaigns (especially Brood War) will get you used to the races, a few different strategies, and learning to play a little faster.
After that, play some multiplayer against the computer AI.
The more practise, the better. Because you never really know how good human players are online until you’re in-game, you don’t want to be smashed every time, and it’s not easy to learn against good players.

Maybe you’re already a good player and don’t need too much practise…

I havent really delved into terran yet but i imagine would be good is Early game 1 - 4 units 5 barrack 6 CC depending on build 9 and 0 for scans and when you transition to mid and late game use f2 for unit production f3 for rally point f4 for extra base if you need to. 1-7 for units and 8 9 0 for scans. At least that would be my guess.

You could also use f keys for army production and rally point early game to.

I suggest watching this and the next episode in the playlist (let’s learn starcraft by day9): Let's Learn StarCraft #3: Intro to Mechanics - YouTube
He explains a lot of things trhougout the episodes.
