Starcraft Fastest Maps Thoughts

In 2004 was the first time I’ve played Starcraft. It wasn’t my first rts game but the one I totally fell in love with. I love the original campaign the most, but broodwar was also a great addition wich I enjoyed fully. When I started playing online I found myself on fastest maps, I was a huge noob who didn’t even know the term itself. Some people showed me the basics of playing SC fastest, it was the first night in my life when I didn’t go to sleep but played a videogame, the feeling was really nice. But then I started to meet bitter people and to get to know the community you can imagine what happened to my young mind.

Nevertheless to come to the point: What I enjoyed most about Starcraft Fastest was the thoughtprocess. Starcraft trains the brains muscles, you have to think in strategies and that fast, and while you are at that you are building units, structures and organizing your military. This makes the brain have a natural high. The more you train and play the more immersive it gets, yet the best point is when you are learning or having a really great game. The downpoints of Starcraft Fastest is that most people want to play in teams as 1v1 is somehow too lonesome and also it has no high gratification. When you play alone you do not feel other people cheering for you, the spirit of teamwork, you feel yourself and the other human, it can be fun but it can also be very boring and tiring. I’m not against 1v1, but for now we are speaking about 3v3’s and 2v2’s. Often one gets a bad team, people complain, or do nothing, play it noob or hack. The list could go on and on with negativities, with time one learns to cope with that all, but it does not take away the fact that playing the campaign alone gives off a much more calm and fulfilled atmosphere than playing with a bad team wich can and will drown your emotions eventually in a downwardsspiral. But there are also good teams and even friends that can make up for it greatly.

Now we get to the ultimate point of my thoughts: You can enjoy Starcraft online and play multiplayer Fastest for sure, yet it is very timeconsuming, in my honest opinion one can only get in good shape after having have played at least 500 matches. It is very time and energyconsuming, playing Starcraft Fastest maps one can not enjoy many other things because your focus becomes them. I’m not saying it’s bad, just laying out some thoughts. I think it is good to play it sometimes with a group of friends, but than also make much place for other forms of entertainment like for instance the campaign, that are not that demanding and resource consuming. Thats my thoughts and I hope they will help others and their lifes.

The FMP scene is still alive and well

I don’t get the benefit of playing in those maps, does it force you to play fast like this one:

tl.net/forum/brood-war/530524-multitask-macro-training-fighting-spirit

Or it has some kind of fun?

It’s much funner to me mostly because it’s very forgiving when loosing units. Regular maps you can’t exactly make too many mistakes without huge consequences or completely loosing the game.

Also, there is a lot more flexibility. You can max certain units for fun, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t but just the fact that you could do something silly like max queens or max corsairs is pretty entertaining.

I play a little of both worlds but i end up finding myself back to fastest maps. Every time i say im sticking to “regular” maps, week goes by and i go right back to fastest. For me personally, “regular” maps seems slow paced for my liking. Fastest, the action begins around 3 min mark and it’s pretty much non stop fighting. Not just fighting but huge waves of units fighting over and over.

Eh, I’ve never really been a fan of FMPs to be real honest. I always liked the “normal” maps + Phantom mode

IMO only useful thing about playing FMP is that can help with your macro. I remember top korean fastest map player challenged Bisu and he got DESTROYED in 10 min. This shows ladder > FMP.

If you are too worry about bad teams, you should try 1vs1 on fastest.
I played last night, most on fastest maps and lost 8 times in a row because mostly my team were not exactly rockies but this kind of guys that you ask for help and they dont give a damn.
Sadly when Starcraft came out COOP play wasnt a thing on online games, so a whole generation just grew up being a bunch of lonely wolfs who join team games. They are worst than noobs, because at least noobs tries to help, they know they are bad and they try to do the best they can to help team, but these guys are just a bunch of idiots who just join team games for blaming others, this guy blaming me because I didnt send him a overlord, when he had the center of the map full of cannons but he didnt do a single cannon in his base, then a lurker killed all his probes and he didnt tell us.
As you said fastest can be a funny experience with the right team but a nightmare if this kind of players are on your team.

Flash recently got destroyed by a fastest player in fastest map multiple times. Does that prove fmp>ladder? No. Does that mean he’s trash? No. It’s just 2 completely different environments.

It takes practice to be good at either one of them.

Flash doesn’t do well against top FMP players, ive seen it on multiple occasions. In fact, in a lot of the games i saw, the FMP player was toying with him.

These games are not old, they are as old as maybe 6 months? 8 at the oldest? They are somewhere on youtube, i remember posting them on teamliquid or starcraftworld, a while back.

I just googled bisu vs fastest player. If you are refering to a game against DOe then you are wrong. He’s not a top fastest player. There are other players FAR better than he is ESPECIALLY in 1v1’s. DOe only plays 3v3 fastest which is pretty casual style of play.

If you are looking for some of the best I can link you to 2 that are insane.

this guy is ridiculously good - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCokJdotaXPlzivRzHFqzuA

this guy is more of a 1v1 player and a scary good one too - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqlcSsDNMYxEsem7bWY-66Q

Both 1v1 and both have beat DOe with relative ease. DOe and these kids are not even in the same category in terms of skill. Keep in mind that those guys lose in 1s from time to time, so we are only speaking about the handful of players who stream. Clearly there are much better players still out there.

My point was that Starcraft fastest is very energy and timeconsuming - tiring. You have to build, mine, plan and organize as fast as it goes, while also concentrating on the battles and that at about ±100 apm. After getting good at that and having some great games I think one should stop, because the fun one gets out of it is much less than the invested time and work.

After being clean from Starcraft Fastest for 8 years I bought remastered and played a bit. What can I say? The game itself is great, the online community on original Starcraft is dead, only Broodwar is alive and for english speaking guys that means, Broodwar US West. I never liked Broodwar online because of the invisible units, but I learned to handle them now. I had some nice games but not one I can say that was great. I think the reason for that is that Broodwar is too fast, aggressive and flexible, whereas the original Starcraft having none of the Broodwar units, gives your decissions much more depth and room for epic battles.

Like I said about 10 years ago I could get one GREAT 3v3 or 2v2 game per week. Thats not much for investing so much time into it, but more than I got out of Broodwar. I also tried to play 1v1, but I must say it is also boring to play it while your rival has a maphack on and builds the whole map full cannons than starts a ragewar of words, I knew 100ths of hackers even friends who used maphack, I guess 50% at that time were using something, so I did not see any point in getting into 1v1 fastest as my main style of play, in my opinion that map is also rather made for teamgames, but it can be fun too.

Most games are filled with complaining people who aren’t even that good at SC, yet think they are pros just because the click a hotkey 200 time a minute to show off their “high apm”. Everyone is calling everyone a noob and trying to upset others, people are going about with psychological issues. Thats why I prefer online games where chatting is forbidden and teamwork works rather with clues and symbolism instead of listening to the psychopathical blubber of a 40 year old kid who chooses his teammates by their records just to have another win. 2006 when I was pretty active in Starcraft I even got to know a young man who wanted to become a woman, this guy/girl… had an account with 1000 wins and zero loss, he created a trapmap for that purpose, a map with fake gayseyrs.

Lastly: I once played against a pretty good venezuelan low map player on fastest. He challenged me to a 1v1 fastest and I won easily, yet I lost to him on the low map. It just shows that you can be trained at the one and bad at the other. Fastest is another style of play, but I must say that I got everything out of it 10 years ago. Like I said, the time and energy to pull it off are costly investitions. Also I would very much prefer a high end CPU as my opponents/teammates in fastest and low instead of human beings unless they are real friends. But still the campaign itself is worth SC. And I’m buying SCII now!

Some of Flash’s most watched videos are him getting destroyed on fastest map by fastest players 458!!! and LeeBokGu. A lot of Korean pros and ex-pros play Fastest very seriously these days. Light, Zero, Sea.KH, Eyewater, Best for example are among the top players. The player you’re referring to is DoE who is mostly a very good 3:3 player but far from a top 1:1 or 2:2 player. Players like 458!!!, GangnamLife, Luckyback, 3D.Style, DDaKKu, Brainshin, infiniteshin, Good_BadNews, Toon who play only fastest are way better. Then there’s clans like Navy, Style, Top, TN_ and a couple others that excel in 2:2 and 1:1.
