When should I use the tempest

I misspoke. The Tempest’s AG range is 10. At one point, it was even 8. I wanted to say/think it was something like 9 now.

How does the tempest go from 15 range to 8 freaking range… to now 10. W/e it is, in practice, it just feels like the most useless thing ever. It feels absolutely MORONIC to get bullied around by tanks, all over the map, regardless of how many tempests you have.

The tempest takes so long to kill a liberator, that it’s not even a “out healing concept” anymore, it’s an outproducing rate of death thing. It’s like for every ant you kill, 10 more are made. “Congratulations, you’ve “countered” the ants.” It’s just such a badly designed unit and it’s embarrassing to leave it in its current state.

I don’t like tempest cuz my widowmines have difficulty reaching them.

Initial AG round after the massive nerf was 8 Range, then it went 10 Range (out of 15) and has never been 11Range AG.
Just a rectification.

Maybe Tempest is an atavism? Back in the alpha-days there was no Carrier and Tempest was intended to replace it (it even had the Shurikens).
Then they introduced the Carrier and were not able to give a defined role to Tempest.
I get that it is a niche-unit (sucks in all departments that matter), but a unit that is not even able to perform a single task efficiently is laughable.

When they say no one is perfect, the tempest is just there to clearly illustrate that and serve as a reminder…

I had whined about mutas forever. Heck, it’s why I’ve only gone 3 stargate builds for the past 3+ years, cause there’s no other way to play macro games without losing to mutas. It’s something that should just be an obvious fact by now.

Initially, the tempest was designed to deal with the muta problem. When David Kim introduced the tempest, in the video, he’s like we know Toss has a big problem with dealing with mass mutas, as there is no option at the moment. The tempest did splash damage to air. It was supposed to be our solution.

So, why did it change? Dustin Browder straight up said… they had to change it because they couldn’t figure out how to balance it. Basically said, I want to make a pizza, but since I have no idea how to do that… I’ll settle with dumpster diving.

Ever since then, it’s just been random justification after random justification and just trying to make up roles for the tempest, that it just ends up failing at, too. The next reason for the tempest existing changed to “we hate colossi wars and this unit will end that.” Reality? The worst unit you could possibly make vs colossi were tempests. No hyperbole. Anytime I saw someone making tempests, or even after the fact, I just a-moved them and won 100% of games.

Then it became like oh… it’s the broodlord killer! The tempest was so slow moving… and so costly and so bad against anything… that you feared so much that anyone would make a broodlord, because it put you in a lose/lose position. Even if you somehow killed the broodlords… you were stuck with tempests doing nothing. Just wasted supply. And, more than that… your army now had to move at the speed of the tempests… to protect the most useless unit ever. It was just comical and sad. Absolutely horrible.

Then, it became “it deals with liberators.” Look at aligulac and see the leading race stats to start LotV. Terran was the leading race every single period, for years straight, while Toss was “trying to use the tempest properly.”

It simply has no purpose or at least fails to adequately achieve w/e it’s supposed to exist for. It needs to be buffed or removed. Normally, I’d say… just leave pointless units… but there’s lower league players that are going to be losing games simply cause they made tempests… Feels wrong…

The only time i see it being made in pro level games is super late game PvZ combined with oracles if there’s a spore forest and even then it’s not consistently made. I’d just skip them

The old school tempests from the alpha were sick. There’s a video of them on youtube.

When you need their fantastic range so you can throw the game harder.

Not a lot change ok big range but huge overkill heavy supply cost

They’re basically the Protoss Ultralisk; sure they can work but they’re pretty bad units in general - and getting them can result in a loss.

So basically, don’t build them because they’re bad, expensive, niche units that subtract too much from an actual army.

If you feel like throwing a game that you’re ahead in, just start making tempests.
