SC2 Crashing on MacOS Catalina with Radeon Graphics

Yeah guys this fixed my issue. Check if you have any space in the name. Mine was MacBook Pro. So I changed it to MacBookPro and the game runs smooth!

Unfortunately, name change didn’t help with the crash I’m having. To begin with, the computer name in Sharing preferences was already one word with no special symbols. And I did try changing it to something else just to see if it has any effect. Alas, the crash is still happening (Vega 48, 8GB).

The name change issue was a different problem after a patch a few months back. It’s not relevant to the Catalina Radeon crashes here.

I’m still keeping track of the reports here and our teams continuing to look into this issue. I’ll provide updates when possible, but I cannot thank you all enough for your cooperation, patience, and understanding on this matter!

MacOS 10.15.5 is out. Does it fix the issue?

I just purchased the 2020 MacBook Pro with integrated graphics and I have the latest OS (MacOS 10.15.15) and I cannot play SCII. It just crashes immediately. My Blizzard app is up to date as well.

I haven’t heard that 10.15.5 should resolve the crashes. The kernel crashes should be fixed after 10.15.4 though. With the driver update though, it’s worth a try to see if it may reduce or help with the crashes.

@Savio, the immediate crashes are likely not related to this issue, could you try the suggestions on this post?

I still get the crash on 10.15.5. using 4.11.4.78285 on 2017 iMac Pro with Radeon Pro Vega. Using High graphics with Metal.
I could not finish a single multiplayer game after “upgrading” to Catalina. Past 3 days I played 3 multiplayer games. About 10 minutes into all these games everything froze and restarted the mac.
So, I am pretty sure 10.15.4 has not fixed the issue (at least not for everyone).
Maybe after 6 months of crash people just abandoned the game and that is why you guys don’t see as many reports.
Sigh. I loved this game man…

How about setting the Graphics API to OpenGL 4.1?

The kernel crashes might have been resolved, but the game still crashes occasionally, albeit without causing the kernel panic. This is on Vega 48. I’ve switched back to OpenGL as a workaround, but the issue at large is still there when Metal API is used.

A similar issue remains Heroes of the Storm (Sky Temple map). Similarly, kernel crashes are gone, but the game still crashes on that map if shader settings above Medium are set.

That worked like a charm. Thanks! You guys are the best.

SC2 4.12.0 is out. Curious if this resolves the Metal crash issue.

iMac Pro here, Vega 56, 10.15.5. My mac hard crashes whenever I get into a big battle. Music keeps going, mouse moves but nothing is clickable. I have to hard reset. I haven’t tried OpenGL yet, but I shouldn’t have to.

MAc Book Air here, since upgraded it to Catalina my game lets me into the menus and everything without an issue, but when i try to make it to match it gets stuck on loading screen forever. Have waited almost 30 mins and no response or crash but doesn’t let me into the game. Can anyone help me?
Everything in Mojave ran perfectly, why does apple hates gaming so much?

mac book pro, after reboot(trying multiple times) game not starting

MacOS 10.15.6 is out. Does it help with the Metal API/Radeon issue?

well - i just started having window server crashes on my MacBook pro - and i was having virtually no problems before hand.
here’s the top portion of the crash report:

It is disappointing as i felt i was making some progress in my horrible ladder play

SC2 version 5.0.0 was released today. Any change?

today i tried with 5.0.0 but nothing change=(
mbp 16-inch, catalina 10.15.5

Hey folks,

This appears to be a driver level issue, so it’s not something we were able to patch with 5.0. We’ll need to wait for the next build of Mac OS to see how things go there. We haven’t confirmed the Radeon Driver crashes have been fixed on Mac OS Big Sur, but once it comes out we’ll be able to check again.

Hey everyone. I found a solution on my mac.

My symptoms:
Battle.net would load but SCII would not launch without errors

I tried, Changing Comp name, resetting Battle.net Game Settings, uninstalling and reinstalling, resetting SMC and DRAM. Nothing worked.

It was not starting at all and was giving an error. Since I do technical support on Macs and have been using Catalina for some time, I figured it may have something to do with the permissions in Catalina for the app.

I went to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access. I then clicked the plus and added Battle.net as a trusted program.

I also added battle.net to Files and Folders in the same Security & Privacy area.

After I added those two settings, I was able to launch SCII. The program worked, but I had no cursor. I was able to see the highlighted fields, so I went to settings and graphics. I changed the Metal to OpenGL and restarted the program. I then got the cursor back and it seems to work.

Hope this helps someone! It was frustrating…
