Monk joins new RTS studio Frost Giant. New Co-Op possibly confirmed

I am glad for them that they do not give up their craft. I will wait for their new successful projects.

How many times have you heard that line coming from the people who actually made SC2?

In case anyone needs something to listen to for 2 hours.

Someone told me Frost Giants investor is Riot Games which has no love for RTS.

I have more hope for Dream Haven.

They have more than one investor, and Riot Games isn’t their biggest. Also, investors are just investors – they don’t need to love the genre the way the designers do, they just need to believe it can be profitable. Obviously one very dominant investor could apply pressure on the designers to go against their vision, but it doesn’t look like it here. These are the people who made Warcraft and Starcraft great, gaining more creative control than they had under Activision Blizzard.

I have hope for Dreamhaven too, though. Hopefully some very cool games await us in a few years, if we can survive until then.

Frost Giant is stocked with alums of Blizzard’s RTS games. Those people left Blizzard specifically because Blizzard said they weren’t doing any more RTS games. Their web page is all about making RTS games; they even put “Real,” “Time,” and “Strategy” as the headers of their mission statement. They’ve done interviews all about their plans to do an RTS, balancing the needs of casual players with high-level competitive play, how they have been successfully pitching an RTS to investors, etc.

If there is one thing you can safely count on, it is that Frost Giant is going to be making an RTS game. It may suck. It may flop. The company may go bankrupt before it ever sees release. But it will be a real-time strategy game.

I think at some point they will attempt to milk Starcraft Franchise for another RTS. The problem, though, is that RTS devs wanted to work on something now and not at some undetermined time in the future. With the way things are at ActivBlizz right now, more than likely the starcraft story will progress further through other game genres and not RTS. It will be just like Diablo Immortal in the sense that they are moving a game to a platform the community really doesn’t want. I can’t wait for that Blizzcon! “Don’t you guys play FPS?”

On that same note, Call of Duty is pretty stale. I know some CoD fans out there will argue with me, but there have been many efforts of putting the Starcraft IP into FPS for a long time now and there’s a good chance that they will attempt that or something else like that. RTS games don’t go well with console market, so they won’t be working on those at Blizz anymore it seems.

I won’t go out by saying Co-op is a dead game, because it’s not. As long as you can get into games with reasonable queue times it will be fine. I still love the game and there is still plenty to do with the prestige from the last update. However, with the news of no more dev resources being put towards co-op mode and the sub-subsequent news of Monk leaving for a new studio makes it as official as it’s going to get. Co-op is now on maintenance mode.

It had a great run guys and it’s a great game. I wish you all the best, but I won’t have much reason to ever look at these forums again.

not sure frost giants made the right choice in hiring kevin dong. will be getting tychus style teleport whereever you want as much as you want, unkillable / auto win commanders.

Regardless i hope they have some good Coop or friendly games in.

I think Real time Strategy games are pretty fun, but the competitive genre doesn’t imo seem to benefit from newer graphics or remakes as much as other genres like fps vs Brood war.

I would definitely not mind some good single player or multi player story or some good PVE scenarios with fun units or things to mess around with. And I do have higher hopes for them over 2020 activision blizzard and hope to see some fun games, just i feel like RTS coop or multiplayer vs PVE or PVP PVE where players fight against PVE mobs (Like tower defence) or maybe coop wars could be fun.

Maybe a minor ‘competitive’ coop spin off mode of 2v2 where both sides could compete to fulfill a given map goal of say, destroying a enemy base, restoring a artifact, or building a army to destroy the enemy castle while defending theirs as well, etc.

After listening to the podcast, I am hopeful. I don’t expect Frost Giant will be making a AAA quality game, but it will be good. Will it be as good as the story lines in SC1 and SC2 maybe. Will multi-player be as good as SC2, maybe. If it isn’t, that’s fine too.
