How will SC2 be remembered as a game of strategy?

A fast paced game where the nuance of strategy is lost on the majority of people within the bottomless pit of whine and tears.

People say there is no strategy in sc2 but they only see the “S” in “RTS” and completely forget that it is a REAL TIME strategy game. This means you adapt on the fly. Best laid plans dont survive first contact, as they say.

Yes, it is fast. But there is still strategy in this game. Wonderful strategy. The last game of Zest vs Dark in the first GSL Super Tournament this year shows that.

Speed, quick thinking and fast decision making kind of Strategy. A common misconception is spam-clicking fest game which is not only the factor of the game. It helps but its not the only thing going on in a match of StarCraft.

The term Strategy is often misunderstood, many times what people call strategy is just tactics, you said it

Strategy is that first (or second) grand planning, what do you want to do in the game, tactics is the rest, how you adapt, how you move, what do you do to achieve that goal.In sc2 terms, strategy is your build/plan depending on the map, tactics are adapting that build and plan to what the enemy is doing. Basically, two levels of thought, short term=tactics and longer term=strategy, it makes no sense applying the word strategy to a game that it is short, you can’t really think everything way ahead this game is probably about 35% strategy and 65% tactics.

Example, strategy is your starting build depending on the map, considering counters, then the transition to lategame thinking about what the enemy will do during lategame. If you want a short game, a long one, the type of style you are going to do, like dropping a lot to achieve a shorter game or a more slower style that lead to lategame…

Tactics are drops, backstabs, multitasking, gamesense, unit control, map control, defending, map awareness…so it is not just clicks.

Great explanation, and very true.
