Michel Chu on his twitter:

“Its common misconception Zenyatta is robot. He is an Omnic. Oh and also asexual”.

Good old J.K. treatment.

It’s pretty much the same with half the at launch heroes, Mercy and Dva also have almost no lore. Heck, they even made a short for Hana and it just lead to more questions.

Yeah, they start so many storylines and finish none…

Problem is… he ain’t got much.

Zenyatta is just an omnic monk who he and a few others went to Nepalli mountains to meditate and achieved trancendense (hence his ult). He taught Genji to accept himself as a semi-omnic human and to forgive his past/his brother, Hanzo. Mondatta, his spritual brother/friend/colleague tried to solve the omnic-segregation through peace, which… we saw what happened in the short “Alive”.

Therefore, Zenyatta doesn’t really have much lore. Like Orisa, Bastion and Athena, omnics/AI are usually used as a tool (both in OW lore & literally in Blizz) to add some random character without having to introduce too much background.
IF they were to fix this, they would end up making more questions than answers like D.VA’s short “Shooting Star” where they introduce the MEKA squad + her friend, but doesn’t really add anything to her lore.

If Zenny is to get a lore spotlight, they would have to add a completely new story for him like how he was made or what troubles he had in the mountains or why he decided to be part of the monk group. But all in all, he’s an omnic and in OW dev team, omnics are the least explained so don’t expect a miracle any time soon.

  • Zenyatta: An omnic monk who fights with balls.
  • Orisa: An omnic caretaker who was made from broken police omnics to become Efi’s personal babysitter.
  • Bastion: Literally a killing machine turned nice.

The omnics in this game get the shaft most of the time when it comes to lore…

Mercy was more “we need a healer for this event to further Tracer’s story” and they chose her.

I’m beginning to think Blizzard is shifting all their focus to WoW; both current and classic to try and stem the damage a bit. Every other game is second priority at this point. Especially since several higher level manager’s left recently and the CFO abruptly leaving… it’s not painting a good picture.

Bastion and DVa both have PTSD.

i doubt you will get some lore any time soon, but you are welcome to browse the collection of food photos posted to twitter

Didn’t Activision say that OW is their favorite game with the most potential (for dem moneyz)?

Zenyatta? More like Zeniyada

It’s not much though.

What is more than a little sad, they are doing a constant Zenyatta erasure. From the little what we have.

Zenyatta has a line where he says to Hanzo that “I sense within you the same rage that once consumed your brother”, which entirely coincided with Genji’s Retribution aura that he exhibitied. And that Zenyatta would have had to meet Genji and witness this rage firsthand to make such a comparison, in the case that he and Hanzo were to ever meet. You cannot sense a rage from just recollections. It has been planned for a long while that Zenyatta apparently meets a dysphoric, angry cyborg at some point and guides him to peace and forgiveness.

Then they decided throw all this out of the window and made Genji OOC (out of character) on Storm Rising and happy-go-lucky, so they could get their fix of Gency without Genji being too pissed off and dysphoric to answer her and just made him a lovestruck generic self-inserted dude, a shallow form of his former self with actual character development.

They’ve not only removed Zenyatta’s abilities by saying his Orb abilities aren’t canon, they’re also erasing his influence for the only person he has connections to in the lore, Genji.

Next thing we know Zenyatta was only a figment in Genji’s imagination. Who needs Zenyatta anyway when Genji already has everything he needs for route of succesful recovery both physically and mentally in the lore?

Zenyatta is nothing more than a plot device for Genji’s spiritual harmony anyway and will apparently become less and less as time goes by.

A blank slate that they keep chipping away bit by bit, instead of adding anything they possibly desired into it. It is not right and it’s the poorest form of storytelling they can possibly manage.

We have genetically enhanced hamster in this game that has more importance, influence, characterization and lore than Zenyatta.

This is something i never even realized but this is right. Why did blizzard do this?

Because Chris Metzen left the team and Zenyatta was his favourite character. Dev team has favourites and biases like everyone else and Zenyatta does not belong in the cast of favourites more than the outcasts of forgotten heroes that they believe will not bring them a wad of money.

I think that’s the worse part. A character just being an extra or side line to another characters growth.

What’s Mercy’s lore?
“Well she and Genji are a thing (friends, maybe more idk), she saved his life and rebuilt him as a cyborg.”
But I want to know more about her, she seems more interesting.

Wow, a robot that is self reflective and that changes peoples lives for the better. That weilds a mysterious power and has control over the light and the darkness. What amazing potential to drive a story from.
“He teaches Genji to calm down and that power isn’t canon. But Genji’s power is, woah dragonblade owo”

The guy just exists he doesn’t even worry about doing the lore just worries about useless details like a character sexuality or if they can or not reproduce.

That could be seen as their usual greed more than anything. It’s NEVER a good thing to see multiple higher managers leave a company at once or over the course of a year like what’s going on with Blizzard. Things like this are often seen as the company is in bad shape, we may not know for definitive how bad it is; but from what we can see it doesn’t look good.
