Roadhog Zarya meta was by and large considered one of the worst metas by the playerbase. Everybody besides hog players wanted it gone, the tank players everywhere were begging to be able to play Rein.
This is just flawed. If nothing else you are operating under the assumption that dps players love playing dps tanks. How many of them did you see during the hog zarya meta running to play either? A guy that gets his kicks from playing Genji or Widow is not gonna go for hog just because hog can secure a kill.
You are supposed to try to keep tank players in the game, not bleed them dry in a futile attempt to get a Hanzo main to pick up a tank.
Just like some split support to main support (more healing) and off support (more utility) you can do the same for tanks.
Some are better for the engagement while is just claiming free space the enemies arenāt standing on while some are better at claiming/protecting a space one team is on.
Reinhardt is amazing at claiming free space slow and steady, you put your shield and make sure your team gets all the space no enemy is on for free, but when the enemies are up close he canāt protect anymore, then itās the job of the 2nd tank. Up close Rein now uses his damage instead to punish enemies that stay up close against him.
but then you have tanks like Winston. While jumping into enemy lines (the engagement) Winston got noting to deal with the enemiesā¦ He can be shot at, booped, stunned and so much more. But when reaching the enemies he can protect the team using his trusty bubble while also doing damage.
In theory Zarya fits Winston category much more but her protection is so low that it doesnāt change alotā¦
You can talk about damage but the damage is more about punishment. Other than just using their protection to claim space or help take an occupied space, tanks also should punish enemies that are in their respective range (depends on the playstyle).
So for example, Reinās method of space claiming is using his giant shield to block any spam low-medium long range damage and if anyone gets in his way heās going to warn him to move or else heāll die with couple of swings.
So for Zarya as a space stealer she got her bubble to protect her team members from any close range damage, but itās also her best range so she got medium range damage and is able to shoot while protecting. Thereās no real reason a tank will be able to attack if enemies give them their space.
Thatās also why every tank but Orisa got close range, most of them either need to fight face to face for a space or just donāt care for the enemies as long they are not in their face.
Orisa is different considering she needs the space empty rather than to use it, so she claims it by putting pressure on enemies in the respective space.
Youāre talking about burst not damage output.
Feel free to test me, Zarya is the 6th strongest hero in the game.
Sure some heroes might do more damage per shot then her, but they have slower fire rate and/or longer reload and/or more ammo consumption per second.
Just so you know, if I include reloads then Zaryaās damage stands on 128.8 while Sombra is 106.7 damage per second. Zarya can shoot for whole 5 seconds before she needs to reload for 1.6 seconds while Sombra shoot for only 3 seconds before she needs to reload for 1.5 seconds- Zarya has much more up time.
But if weāre talking about burst alone, take in mind it takes Zarya around 1.176 seconds to melt a squishy while any other tank (with the exception of Roadhog) does so in minimum 2 seconds. (without including healing for both sides ofcourse).
If weāre talking about Junkrat from range, it will take him 1.334 seconds to kill a target, more time than Zarya.
Depends on the kind of space you want. A free space or an occupied space?
If no enemy stands on the space it makes sense damage will not be useful to get the space. You just claim it and then tanks with the ability to use their protection to secure the free space are better.
Reinhardt,Sigma,Orisa,hammond & D.va are responsible to make sure their team is safe before they reach the enemies. After that their job as protectors is over and they can go for damage in order to help put pressure on an occupied space punishing the enemies for stopping them.
Zarya,Roadhog & winston are more focused on the fight itself, they canāt do much to help with free space, but they are better for keeping your team safe while putting pressure on the enemies. Because itās already a face to face fight they need their damage like anyone else but in exchange for providing no ability to claim free space they are able to occupy taken space much easier with protections that are made for that specific kind of situation.
Roadhog creates distance between enemies to your team, which helps a lot against close range enemies.
Zarya makes sure a team member is protected and punish aggression
Winston separates his target from the rest of its team while also providing protection to your team.
Every tank needs the right space for its team, and needs to help them either get it or claim it.
Depends on the tank it will have protection for the situation it should be better.
All tanks ofcourse would be able to help putting pressure in the fight for the space in order to punish enemies that donāt respect the tank goal but the protection itself is better for a different situation.
