You're the new Blizzard CEO. What's the First Thing You Change?

You come to the office, and it’s time to make some big moves with Overwatch. They’re looking at YOU to steer this game in the direction you think it needs to go.

What do you say?

Me? I’d say this…

  • This is a team game. We need a way to create actual teams. Introducing TEAM BUILDER.
Name your team. Pick a logo. Fill your roster. Schedule play times. All in-game.

  • Play your TEAM vs. other TEAMS and get a TEAM SR.
This works how the current SR works. Which sounds great, but it’s meant for teams. Not random people just trying to have fun. From now on, only Team Builder teams get a Team SR…

  • Because we’re moving everyone else to an entirely PERSONAL SR
No longer will a Leaver, Thrower, or Smurf dictate YOUR RANK. You play your best. You get the rank you deserve. We’ll use ALL the stats we can to shape this rating. You can’t really abuse it much because, hey, trying to play lone wolf doesn’t get you far in OW anyway. You can have a Team Rating and a Personal Rating. I don’t currently know what the hidden MMR is like, but i’d get to take a look as the new CEO, and perhaps your Personal SR would just be the current hidden MMR. The idea of Personal SR is to make OW less infuriating. You’re playing to see how YOU rank. Not how 5 other people can screw you over.

  • Brand new reward system that allows you to unlock things for heroes by playing them. No more random loot boxes. However, there will be cosmetic items you can buy. You see it in a store. You want it. You buy it. There’s not gambling involved.

That’s it. I think that could fix a lot to start with.

How about you?

I’d make alt accounts free on PC

Also your idea is similar to a guilds post I made

“prime” feature as in CS:GO. So you can link your account to a prime Competitive where you can register with your phone number after your account reaches e.g. lvl 150 or something like this (has to be tested). You would seperate smurfs/new players from people who want to play on their main account and at the current time probably leave smurfs to play vs. smurfs.

I’d put in a meta twister. Something automatically buffs low pick rated heroes (in Masters / GM) and Nerfs high picked heroes on a weekly basis.

It will stop a meta forming for any real length of time, and it will make the crazy OP and UP heroes fixed faster rather than having to wait 6 months for fixes to take effect.

It will mean people will know who will get nerfs / buffs ahead of time, and more importantly, why - so most of the angst people have around buffs / nerfs will go away.

People won’t feel their hero is being left in the bin, nor that the current meta is smothering (whatever the current meta is).

I’d also start banning People who drop from Plat into Bronze, Diamond into silver, Master into gold etc.

You will be able to get rid of a LOT of the Smurfing that way, and would make a large different right now to the toxicity the game has.

I’d put in a roleQ, but, make it optional, so people in there would also end up in games with the soloQers, and groups (so that game times wouldn’t get worse)

Delete Overwatch. Let the game go down as a hero of the dps/moba genre.

Rework doomfist into a tank
Rework Brigitte into something that actually requires some skill (need to aim E, Increase bash cool down, reduced speed while holding shield)

Ban the words Smurf and thrower from the forums. Tell people to quit being cry babies.

In all seriousness I think you don’t have bad ideas BUT let’s talk about team builder. Not a bad idea except where are you going to find said teammates? If it’s random, then it’s not much different than LFG, if different at all.

Hire more staff. Can’t go wrong with more staff.

So, back in the day, when I was in bronze, the icon people had was the highest rank they had in the season, not the one they were in now.

I went a week, playing 4 hours a night, and every single game had a plat+ player in it.

They want fair games. Ignoring that massive problem is bad for the game. If you were CEO, your choice is to ignore that problem and have it get worse? or do you step up and actually do something about it?

Sticking your head in the sand is a bad answer to problems.

Point is, I’ve played multiple competitive seasons. In no way, shape or manner do I agree that Smurfs and throwers are the problem they are made out to be.

People have a real problem with someone being better than them, or with losing. Therefore, if they lose they must blame ANYONE but themselves. Someone was a Smurf and too good, or someone wasn’t good enough so was throwing.

I’ve encountered a few throwers, and maybe a few Smurfs or just people who were really good. I live with it. I report the throwers. Honestly, everyone says Blizzard reporting system doesn’t work but I’ve never reported someone and not received an “Account action notification.” If the reports are legit, it works.

Part of being a good CEO is knowing what is a legitimate issue, and understanding you will never make everyone happy. Focus your time and resources on the legitimate issues for the good of the company.

People can go a week of playing without having a fair game.

I am not sure how you don’t see that as a legitimate issue. Just because YOU are not at the ranks where it is really bad (and I am not any more either) it doesn’t make it less of an issue.

What ranks do you feel have this issue?

Also could you define what you feel is a “fair” game?

End of season people throw down the bronze ALL the time.

I would say not having person who was a Plat+ earlier in the season would be a good start.

They don’t have a couple of bad games and then end up in Bronze by accident.
Diamonds don’t end up in silver by accident.
Masters don’t end up in gold…

You wouldn’t get rid of all of the smurfing which goes on, but, damn you would make a hell of a dent if you started banning people being that obvious, because that IS the bulk of the people.

Search chat logs for people admitting to smurfing wouldn’t be all that hard either, they are usually PRETTY open about which SR they have come from, and there isn’t a lot of variations in the messages where they say that.

If a Plat has thrown to Bronze, you do not have a fair game. As CEO, you would be able to ask people to give you the numbers of how often that is happening.

You will find the numbers “high”

Add a first come first served qp server. Eliminate sr as a matchmaking factor and handicap wins/losses by standing sr.
Bronze players could see higher levels of play, people can play with their distantly ranked friends, upper ranked players wouldn’t have to resort to subterfuge if they want to come down from the hill and stomp on some noobs…

I would release an officially licensed Prima strategy guide online. It would be updated with every live patch, and I would have some really good fact checkers on it too, to make sure it was accurate and up to snuff.

I would say add a new hero every 1.5 months.

-Delete Brig and a couple other heros like Hammond that make this game a joke.
-Nerf spam/low skill floor heros (like junkrat) to the point they’re a throw pick
-Role queue, at least for a season to see if it helps
-Way more maps
-Let people queue for certain maps or at least map types, every other game does this
-Leavers/throwers punished more harshly
-Get rid of MMR, win/loss is the only thing that impacts SR
