YOU'RE NOT STUCK, Gaining SR is just HARD, get over it already!

Hi,

Just thought I would give this topic some solid thought, because i hear many people claim they are “stuck” for , say 5 seasons , while only playing 100 games or 200 games a season … :zipper_mouth_face: and i think it’s a mistake, an improper use of the language which may lead to you actually being stuck. :worried :

So, it’s all math, I’m here trying to calculate the number of matches you need to get out of your rank given a specific win rate, thankfully, the math is quite straightforward :slight_smile::

The following variables will be used

  • S: needed SR
  • N: Total number of games to be played
  • W: number won games
  • L: number of lost games
  • R: win rate %
  • G: Expected SR per match (+/-)

The equations we need are:

  • S = G*(W-L)
  • W=R*N
  • L=(1-R)*N
    solving the system of equations, we can get the N, number of games: N = S/(G(2R-1))

Now, assuming you want to get to the next rank , starting from the bottom (500SR), and assuming you have a moderate win rate (52%), and you gain/lose 25 SR per match.

with some match magic, it’s really ez to see the picture crystal clear… solving the above equations:

N = 500
W = 260
L = 240

You need 500 games to get to the next Rank !! :exploding_head: ,
you would lose 240 of them, and win 260.

it’s not easy, you need to gear up, and GRIND UP THE GAME. :muscle:
if you only play 100 games a season and claim you’re stuck, you’re not !

Now , using the same math, here is a table of many possible winrates, and the number of games you would need to play for a certain SR gain:

Find your win rate in the first column, then find how many SR you need in the top row, the intersection would be the number of games you need to play to get that SR :slight_smile:

WR/SR 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 450 500

But it’s quite simple. There is no need for math.

Win more games than you lose.
GG.

too trivial [20char]

Isn’t that presuming each account is linear?

Some accounts have multiple leavers on their team per session,with each leaver on their team. Some accounts rarely have leavers on their team, such as certain accounts that stream multiple hours of a given session.

That’s one example of many that in unsure are in your equation. Unless I’m not seeing things.

What you’re saying is absolutely correct, the equations are not 100% accurate,
I am assuming a constant SR lose/gain, while it depends on the MMR, and team you’re in , the average SR of the game you’re in as compared to your SR and many more… the things you brought up are among those…

However, it’s a very good estimation, especially when you’re winrate is not so high , say <= 65% , which most normal people are…

I agree with the fact that you need to grind the game to gain SR. But there’s also other ways.

When i was bronze/silver I grinded the game to get to gold (when i say grind i mean theses where the times where i played the most per season… which is only 25hrs LUL). When I arrived in gold, i started to play a lot of pugs and I joined a team and we scrim a lot. I also bought another account to play with friends (because i don’t wanna to get “carry” to another rank, i wanna climb solo) or to learn new heroes. (don’t get me wrong, my alt is pratically the same sr as my main).

So yeah, i went from 2000sr to 2500sr with a 90% winrate. In my case, i practice a lot away from comp and got better at the game so when i decided to play a couple of competitive game they seemed easy for me.

You do need to grind the game, but not necessarily comp. Just play in a competitive environment, find pugs, get a coach, find a team, scrim, etc

Alrighty. Just checking.

If you want an accurate equation for your own play you can record SR gains and losses to figure that out. If you wanna get fancy you can correlate it to maps and/or heroes.

I did that at one point… but in all honesty, it’s just a waste of time isn’t ? take that time to review your games, the value is way better.

I do both, but I also spent four hours trying to represent all the supports’ healing potential with equations… I’m 100% crunching numbers because it’s fun.

Would you care to share your results?

I don’t necessarily believe the numbers are accurate (there’s a ton of factors being either ignored or assumed, both human or otherwise) but I do agree with the general sentiment.

People seem to think they deserve a new rank after a dozen games, when the reality is that it takes easily over 100 to accurately place someone, and that’s still assuming you really deserve it and aren’t just full of it.

Eight (8) games a day for 60 days straight for 500 games.
This sounds a little absurd, but that’s why there are multiple seasons with placements that put you right where you left off.

This is why everyone hates mmr. Forced 50 50 handicap matches just lock you into a rank. The only people who benifit from mmr are those that are doing poorly and don’t deserve to win.

It was months ago, so I’ll have to find where I left those notes, but when I find them I’ll post them.

Oooo, only 20 more games to go for Diamond. 70% winrate ayyeee

somewhat accurate actually. on my main account i recently one tricked brig from … 1730ish to 2495. ive since lost 51 SR, total games thus far is 66. 47-18-1 with a current 72.31% win rate. 66 games to move 765 SR with a 72.31% win rate … although at times it was as high as 83%.

When I first placed on my alt I had 100% win rate on tank for most of the season. It was a problem because I got to a spot where I felt really challenged and then shot right past it into games I felt useless in. I had to start games by going into chat and telling my team “Yo, I’m a bit boosted at the moment. Assume I know nothing and please tell me if I’m doing something stupid.”

People were super cool about it and I actually learned a lot from their calls.
