"Your rendering device has been lost! Application closing!"

For context, this morning I updated my graphic card drivers and I also had updated windows. After I finished updating I started to get this error when loading into a game

“Your rendering device has been lost! Application closing!”

At first I had it when I was playing QP but I figured it was because I had yet to restart my pc for the windows update. So I did that.

I left, came back home and opened OW and queued for stadium

I felt so bad for my teammates because I kept getting disconnected either mid game or between rounds and only in that last 2 rounds did it kinda stop…

I don’t know what to do :frowning: I hate leaving games and I feel bad for the teammates that suffered through this technical issue.

Any advice is greatly appreciated ;-; ty

SOLUTION: I rolled back to previous graphic drivers and the issue seems to have been solved.

I was able to play 1 custom game match with my husband vs AI [this was to test if with a lot of visual clutter my game would crash] and it worked well.

After that we both queued for a QP match and it went without issue. I will update if after playing a couple more it crashes again but… so far so good

Yeah rolling back the driver is the way to go not sure what nvidia did with the most recent driver push but it was clearly not tested enough, i had to do the same roll back as i got crashed out of 2 quick play games with the same error

Yes, it was the way to go. The problem didn’t come back at all, thank goodness. Yeah the most recent drivers have been awful for performance across the board

Glad we got it fixed by rolling it back though, good luck on your games!

Just want to confirm the same issue with 576.40 and rolling back to 576.28 worked better for me.

I just got this issue with Nvidia driver version 576.52 which came out on May 19th 2025. I am downloading the previous version, 576.02. Will report after testing.

Can confirm that rolling back to the previous version fixed it for me!

Came here looking for a solution. Nvidia’s drivers have caused me issues in other games as well as Overwatch. Not sure what these last 2 updates were meant to accomplish, but it’s obviously not working. I’ve rolled back as well.

Can confirm as well. With the new drivers i would get the error consistently in the middle of games, and it stopped after I rolled back

Been crashing all day. Found posts from 2 years ago with this issue and nothing they offered help. Just found yours after my 3rd crash. Hopefully reverting fixes it.

Hope it will fix your issue too!

I’ve been avoiding updating my drivers for the time being since that day bc I don’t want to risk it again until they actually patch the issues with their drivers ;-;

this worked on my rtx 4080, thanks

I just rolled back to the mid April game driver (idk which version, but everything is working for me as well)

I rolled back to April 30th driver 576.28, played a few quick plays with no interruptions. Seems to have worked for my 5060ti

This might be the dumbest question, but I have managed to revert my driver to just the previous one. How do I go back further? I went back one and it didn’t fix it.

you can go here nvidia[dot]com [slash] en-us[slash] geforce [slash] drivers [slash] and manually find the driver you are looking for!

my pleasure ! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝

From what it looks like, said driver update affects 40 and 50 series gpus.
i have a 3050ti and it runs just fine with no crashes, but my streamer pal was having this issue (specifically with overwatch) and she has a 4070 super. im wondering if this is the same update that was meant for doom dark ages and it messed up other things cuz the update that broke the camels back for her was the one that dropped just before dda released. and ive heard that people with 50 series stuff had this issue at first as well

Guys this also works on the 4060 Ti??, I was doing fine until last month and I can’t play whatsoever.
Rolling back to 576.28 is the way or do I need to go back even further??
