Hi guys ! I’ve been back to playing comp games for like a month and I’m quite surprised with all the slurs starting by “shut up you gold portrait hardstuck in Diamond”.
I haven’t been playing in competitive (except for the placement matches to get golden weapon coins) since March 2018 because I have reached my maximum as a player (3k7 and accidentally barely reached GM twice). I realized quickly enough that I wasn’t “GM” material because I couldn’t flex enough or simply wasn’t good enough (which I’m fine with).
Back then (when I was a “regular” Master with my 3k7), my portrait was silver and I’ve never received any insults related to my portrait and rank. I’ve been playing a lot of Mystery Heroes and some other Arcade Modes for more than a year and I’ve reached the golden portrait quite fast.
Now that I’m back to playing competitive, my rank has decreased a bit (3k3) and I don’t get why it is so hard for people to understand that some people with gold portrait don’t necessarily play a lot of competitive. Of course I couldn’t keep my Master rank after a one-year break off competitve.
What do you guys do when people keep harrassing you because of your portrait and your rank ? Do you think Overwatch should let us hide (or choose) the portrait we want to show ?
I remember being miserable when I reached the Gold portrait because esthetically speaking, Silver portraits were so much prettier. It’s also very annoying when players (often smurfs) keeps shutting you out when you dare give an advice or suggest a tactic.
Plus its super funny when they’re trying to get your attention
Anyway I don’t think they’ll bother with hiding portraits
With the profiles I heard stories of people like throwing because others wouldn’t play their most played hero and whatnot so it was actively impacting their games
All these portrait stories have just been people saying mean comments and nothing else which isn’t that high of a priority for me to think blizzard should start working on it right away
People will look for any excuse to insult you. Know that they are terrible people not worth you’re time so don’t feel bad. Best thing I learned was when to realize that someone isn’t worth you’re time or energy, try to pay them no heed. If you want to you can report them, but they feed off of being inhumane.
Yeah I know. I was in competitive tonight and a player said something so true about voice chat (or text chat) : “Below 4k, voice chat is a joke”.
I feel like VC hardly ever helps you get better. There’s always one Donnie (or Debbie) downer around to ruin the whole thing.
That’s what I often do but it’s kinda sad. It wasn’t like this between 2016-2017. I mean, I don’t remember having to come to this back then. Plus, people usually report you for leaving VC even if you’re not the culprit for taking such action.
I think they should give us the option to hide our portrait like our profiles. People can no longer use it as ammo against you and it has the added benefit of pissing those same people off because portrait hiding is now an option. Double win.
True. This is the one last thing people can use against us now that we have hidden profiles.
There are a lot of people that are quite unhappy about the hidden profiles but if we’re being objective, the game is proving us it would be a mistake to make the profiles public again since portraits became the new target when it comes to toxicity.
People will focus on everything, but not on their own missplays
There is actually no good solution to this. I had such situations already and if you start arguing with them it only gets worse… mute or leave the chat they’ll report you (got a warning next day after having 2 of such games with stacks harassing me).

Oh sorry, I’ve never been interested in OWL (or streamers) so I kinda suck when it comes to recognizing those names. I may have heard of 2-3 streamers (from EU mostly since I play on EU servers).
I thought “Architect” was a class or hero from another game xD… the name got me confused sorry xD !
Anytime someone insults my border+rank I just reply with something like “yeah, i just don’t buy new accounts to hide my level like you do”. They will always get super defensive and I’ll just keep poking them until they start getting really mad… then I mute and move on.
Hello my friend I totally agree with you. I have a worse situation than yours since I play from an old laptop with a little shorter screen and I have a medium connection (70ms PINS 30 IND) and I had to reduce EVERY graphic option to minimum to touch an oscillating 130 Fps.
I’m platinum border 5 stars and I play in high gold rank (sometimes ppl troll my games and I descend to high silver then I climb back alone). I got tired to argue with those toxic elements and my 2.000.000 reports against them seems like they are not working. Here’s the best solution: Mute Chat even in Ranked Games (you don’t want to lose your focus on the mission to answer to that kind of gent) and use the best pick to help your team (there’s no need for communication trust me it’s all about compo). If u play Quick Games just hide chat and unhide it at the end of the game to report ppl insulting you. Ow team sometimes receive those reports. I play much better now with chats disabled and I realized that this game never really needed a chat (they could have added some guild system to chat between guild mates). Be strong and never lose your fun for this game. Overwatch is an awesome game and we must help it grow bigger and better so be a great example to everyone

I know what it’s like to play on a laptop… I played World of Warcraft on mine for years before changing my mind. It wasn’t that bad actually until there’s overheating issues after year 1 or 2 !
Congrats on your High Gold rank, I hope you reach plat soon ! I finally managed to hit Master again but the problem is that I’m soon gonna reach platinum border and I guess people are gonna tell me “you damn platinum border hardstuck in Master” haha… There’s no getting away from those insults until we can choose the border we want to display.
