It’s actually not a bad move.
You are getting used to skins being $20, which is a ridiculously high price for an item in a game. But you’re getting used to it. And therefore, you’re lowering your standards.
Before OW2, maybe you would have agreed to buy a legendary skin for $5 and you would have made topics complaining about the price of skins if it was $10.
But now you’re used to skins being $20. So next year, when they rerelease the skins for $10, you’ll be tempted to buy them, even though it’s still very expensive for an item in a game. But it’s a lot better than $20.
That logic is so backwards it will never happen
I still have not bought a single item from the shop and I’ve been playing this game for years. I actually spent 20$ for an assassins creed themed skin in destiny because you can fully customize the colors applying any shader you want and you can mix and match armors to your hearts content. Basically its beyond any form of customization that overwatch could have so it was worth 20$. The skins in overwatch cant be customized, no colors apart from what the mythic skins offer, no armor to mix and match unless its mythic. Legendary skins in overwatch are worth 10$ and I would never pay more than that. The skin can have the best looking skins ever and I still wouldn’t buy it, you just gotta know their worth.
It happened to Apex and it’s still going strong money-wise.
(Even low-effort recolors seem to be pulling a lot of cash too)
It might work, it might not.
Even if you don’t fall for it, the remaining userbase might be a tad weaker to this strategy.
I think it’s understood why it costs so much money.
They’re greedy bastards, nay?
As long as you still have a few brain cells and understand something about value for money and know where the money ends up in such large companies, you will never accept it.
I bought deep rock galatic (including three cosmetic sets (complete armor set with color scheme for all weapons) for an additional 5€ in the steam sale) which is still cheaper overall than a single legendary skin in Overwatch. for less money, I got a full game and also supported the small studio behind it, because they work together with the community and are on the same wavelength, in contrast to Blizzard where most of the money goes to the management and shareholders instead of the devs .
I mean, $10 is pretty much my limit for any cosmetic and it has to be one I would really want. Have paid for skins in LoL before for that price point. So don’t think them starting at $20 has effected my thinking.
When companies saw that GTA online and Fortnite made literal billions from microtransactions, why wouldnt they follow that business model? No one to blame except the players that support it.
They used to sell event skins for 3000 coins when they got released and then 1000 coins the next year.
So that’s already what they were doing to some extent.
You can find real life Overwatch costumes for around $20. Let’s also not forget that one Lucio Ohs thing which you can buy for less than the in game version. Spare me your overpriced virtual item defending. They are exploiting idiots who are bad with money and normal reasonable people have to pay the price.
I hate that you’re right.
Like game prices.
imho they would milk more with exclusive items available for a short time only and for real money only.
back in ow1 i would dish out 20$ any day for a limited skin. even if i never play the hero.
now in ow2 my Standards for buying a skin is always tied to: will i play this hero AND use that skin?
if its not THE BEST skin imho for one of my mains, i dont buy it.
It’s not really going to change the normal players buying behavior but the whales. They are testing the limits with it, the whales will have a certain threshold too where they won’t pay because even they see that it’s simply too much but they haven’t reached said threshold yet, they are still making big bank from skins and battle passes because the whales think the prices are OK.
that would be a thing if it was after 6 months, but 12 months i don’t care, not to mention why buy skins if you already have one you like, which is why they tried this one punch cross over event, cause when i see a skin in the shop i gage do i like it better or worst then the skin i already have, however with this cross over event of one punch it changes the dynamic do i like that anime show or whatever instead of is it better or worst than this other skin
Except it was difficult to convince myself the two skins I bought outright during OW1’s run were worth $10 with both being decent to high tier legendaries. Like, Atlantic and Royal Knight are gorgeous, is Bee as gorgeous? No, but that’s how far my same $10 will go now.
I’m not getting used to it, it’s just another facet of the game I no longer have any investment or interest in after the relaunch.
New season, event, crossover, who cares it’s gonna cost you $20 for almost anything that isn’t vaulted OW1 stuff I probably have or do not want.
Well, they’re (as in, the devs) used to skins being $20, not the majority of the player base.
Sure, the company studied market trends and realized that there are enough players willing to cough up that kind of money for skins that it would be worth their while to start selling them for that amount. But still, that doesn’t mean the majority of players see it that way.
I haven’t bought any skins and don’t ever plan to. For me, and let me emphasize that part… for me, it is not at all justifiable with inflation these days. $20 can go a loooong way towards a lot of other actual necessities, as opposed to a digital good that I can only ever “use” while playing a game. Not to mention, it’s one skin… out of dozens of skins available to each hero, out of numerous heroes. The amount of time I’ll even wear the skin is minimal and not worth the price.
yknow, its expensive as hell but so many games get away with it. I know the major similar games do similar but I play more unrelated stuff such as pocket camp and pokemon cafe remix. Both phone games, and skins/outfits in those games are so damn expensive. Cafe has pokemon outfits for 20 bucks, a 2d puppet animated product (yes, cute, but worth that much? no). HOW? But, folks don’t look at the full scope, they just compare to games that are similar to overwatch, but their marketing certainly looks further, into phone games and the like. It sucks, but it’s really how the market is right now.
Until the kids get out in the world and realize the value of a dollar that is.
I haven’t spent one red cent on OW2 and I don’t plan on doing it still.
It’s already happening. Back in the day 20$ was the price of a DLC or an expansion pack. Now it’s what, one skin? Two if they feel “generous”. People don’t even ask “why does a skin cost 20$”, they ask “why is it so ugly”.
For $10 is enough for me.I can afford $20 but I can feel ridiculous & generous at the same time.$10 for 1k gold,I just buy BP & get 6 more skins.I get cracked if I got no new skins & can’t play like a champ.Good things I didn’t buy soldier mumen rider skins.Cuz it’s free from event.I’m new with OV2 & just got roadhog pachimari skins too from event. Its looks good on him.i think Overwatch dev isn’t so bad at all.i’m loving this game " lol
Btw,I didn’t buy one punch bundle.i gotta buy them next time when prices goes on sale.
Budget is tight now :'D
I, for one, have no problem with Blizzard milking cosmetics addicts.
