You don't even need to play to climb through ranked

Hey, its my first time posting. I was playing on Shambali Monestary and our team got absolutely destroyed. I was checking people after the game and found this individual. He has only 100 hours playtime and only 30 hours competitive play. He placed platinum 2 in season 11, then he only played and lost 1 game on season 12 and his rank became diamond 4. This season he started in diamond 4 and played more games and now sits at diamond 5. How do you go from plat 2 to diamond 4 without even playing? I add screenshots down to see for yourselves. Match was on PC Eu server in range from plat 1 to diamond 4. The code for match is 11P28X

Thanks for reading this through

He won matches against the expectation of losing those matches with high uncertainty value. Simple!

I also think the MMR required to be at a certain rank shifts, so last season’s plat could be today’s diamonds for example

He played only 1 match in season 12 and he lost that match, even if that match was with high uncertain value, he lost it, and his rank changed to diamond 4. I never heard you can climb 4 divisions by losing a game. If you look into the reply code, he is struggling to hit dva with Cassidy, which makes no sense if his mmr somehow became diamond, but to be fair he is doing much better on pharah. It feel really weird to me.

The rank icon you see in comp does its best to imitate your hidden MMR that they don’t show you for what ever reason blizzard has for doing that.

If he placed plat 4 in season 11, then did 60 hours of quick play since then and improved a lot but never touched comp doesn’t mean the MMR has no clue that he has improved a bunch since then.

EDIT: I’m not stating this as a fact - Just my ‘theory’ to explain what you’re describing. It is a known known though that MMR is tracked during quickplay so I’m guessing if the dude maybe spent 10 hrs unlocking comp then doing what ever you said… 30 hours? placing plat 4 then gave up playing comp for a few seasons and played 60 hours of quick play since then but improved a ton in that time the MMR would be able to track that.

Career profiles would only sshow you “Games won” - he might have only won that 1 single game that you saw but had 9 other losses to trigger his rank to show again but still even with that was enough to improve his rank because he did so well in QP?
