Xbox upgraded my Overwatch to Overwatch 2 but…

Why do I still need the original Overwatch disc in the console to launch the FTP Overwatch 2 update?

Because there is some info still stored on the disk

Wouldn’t that make it an update and not a sequel?

I’m sure this will change on 12 AM PT when OW2 goes free to play. Currently Overwatch 2 isn’t available to “buy” / download for new players. It’s still listed as P2P game.

Maybe. It won’t even launch w/o disc. So another update to fix this?

This is backend stuff on Microsoft side. Once the game is listed as “F2P” then all should be able to start the game without disc. The disc right now is still your license that you own the “Pay 2 Play” version of OW1.

Unless the game was purchased digitally, you will have to continue using that disc for the game. Your Overwatch disc is now Overwatch 2.

Hope this helps.

The only versions of Overwatch 2 that have hit are the patches to the original game. Once the console stores updates with the full retail versions of the game, and you still want to play Overwatch 2 without a disc, you’ll have to go to the store and download the digital version.

It must be updating off the old key on the disc.
