Lets say that Overwatch was built from the ground up with movement acceleration, do you think the game would be better overall than what we have now?
Heroes like Widow would be balanced drastically differently and mobility wouldn’t be as absurdly powerful, meaning the game would require less CC overall as well.
Personally I feel like having zero movement acceleration causes more problems than benefits but I understand why people would want to keep it as is.
At this rate I feel it’s too late to turn back. If I understand correctly, you are just wondering what kind of game Overwatch could be if it had movement acceleration implemented.
That’s a really tough question, but in general I think that no matter how much balancing goes into it, hitscan will dominate by a huge margin still. People who are good at Widow now will be hated even more, and ADAD movement tactics would be almost useless.
The existing decision to remove any movement acceleration coincides with just how fast-paced Overwatch is, even though I don’t believe it was intended to be that way from the beginning.
Now if Overwatch were console-only, where practically infinite aim sensitivity isn’t a thing then I might see this being able to work, because would not only aim be slower, but balancing could revolve around a slower-pace too.
The game has a variety of imbalanced time to kill ratios. Symmetra and Zarya cannot KO people as fast as McCree theoretically can. They are unable to headshots at all.
Jumping and crouching are moments of guaranteed react-able damage output due to slow down effect and stuck momentum in the air. A predictable arc.
By giving that to OW you give that to all characters and the one’s who benefit are the inherent faster to KO potential. By no character having the ability to really definitively have guaranteed damage output you can have outplay moments.
The Symmetra tracks better than McCree because she has better movement and aim, but can win because she’s not screwed over by his faster time to kill.
No… Take Genji for example… His swift-strike would just be as good as it is currently but because he would now have movement acceleration, once he dives someone, he would be a lot easier to deal with.
If everyone was just aim-dueling in OW it would be really trash because of the lack of acceleration. There are a lot of factors in OW, though, that force people to do stuff besides AD-crouch spam.
Ultimately, I don’t think anyone is a fan of the fact that a lucio or soldier rolling his face on keyboard can’t be shot by a GM hanzo.
People have been asking it for ages, but it doesn’t happen for the simple reason that it would make the game an actual FPS.
It wouldn’t necessarily make the game any slower btw. Just increase the top speed by 10% (or more if needed). Quake has tons of acceleration, and is still fast-paced af.
Like in CS? Omg, I’ve been played it 18 years in a row (old versions) then stop and went to OW, then I’ve tryed play cs again, it was feels bad, because of messy movement acceleration, I cant control my player-model anymore, it’s… so slow! =) If overwatch will implement it, I will be op at my damage deallers pool.
I’m not saying it would be worse (or consoles are worse or anything like that) , just that movement acceleration could theoretically work better on consoles than it would on PCs, where the native mouse control scheme allows players to snap onto targets, an area in which gamepads are not as capable.
