With PVE dead, what's the point of Overwatch 2?

Firstly, a link to the post where I found this information: PVE is officially dead. No more planned releases - #14 by KEKIsBack-1735

Inside is a bloomberg article detailing how the rest of the PVE content is scrapped. As if we didn’t know that already. First, I’ll briefly voice my typical displeasure at the announcement:

I think its outright pathetic that a AAA company in the year 2024 has to cancel PVE content “to focus on the PVP and what makes Overwatch great”, but games companies decades ago could have a Campaign, PVP, and PVE side modes in their $60 releases. Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, you name it, they had it. And their PVP was fantastic regardless.

But that’s not what I want to talk about here. I ask you now, after all is said and done, WHY did we lose Overwatch 1? Overwatch “”““2"””" was supposed to fix engine bugs, but I don’t think they did. I see the same Reinhardt and Doomfist bugs from OW1 in here? I’m sure that’s because Overwatch “”“”“2"”“”"'s engine is an upgraded/updated version of the first engine, but personally I’m not pleased with what we have. I don’t particularly see a difference in game quality, do you?

Secondly, the PVE was the other main reason for getting whatever the hell Overwatch 2 is, so with that gone, what do we have? Are you satisfied with a sequel in the form of a controversial balance patch? Who could have bungled such a bright and shiny IP like this other than Blizzard’s higher ups?

It was to convert the monetization to a free to play model.

Money.

Pretty sure it’s just a legal excuse to change their monetization scheme and nothing more. PVE was to sell it to the players.

The difference here is that these franchises released several full-priced entries you had to buy separately. We paid for OW once back in 2016, and any new OW2 players got to play for free.

You can’t release continuous, free content for an active PvP game without making money somewhere. Would you rather pay $60 for new OW content every year or just accept the monetization change?

Could you, just for once, stop being right. Can you be wrong, and say something like “Overwatch’s next season is going to bomb” and have to correct that to “I was wrong, this season is actually the best we’ve gotten in literal years”?

No? Okay.

Diabolical; I genuinely can’t believe what happened to this thing. Just imagine your me completely ignorant to what Overwatch is, and then you happen to play it on a free weekend. I went from someone who didnt care to a fan just like that. I bought the game, full priced (the PS4 only sold it in some weird bundle edition) and I played for hours every day. And I’m a single player game guy, so that was a big deal for me.

Now, sitting here, I wish it never happened. That’s not a joke, I’m getting more and more annoyed by Overwatch news, but for personal reasons, I keep trying to tough it out.

No, no no. I’m not buying this nonsense excuse. Overwatch 2 was made off the back of a complete, full price game. Its ran by a AAA studio, and they could just SELL the PVE for $60 if they wanted to as a sort of expansion pass. I’m not going to talk about Overwatch 2 like they’re some indie devs.

The format change to 5v5 and the monetization change from a one time purchase to a F2P with MTX

PVE was always meh at best so really no loss here

This right here

I’m sad now. I’m one of the few that liked the PvE.

What’s the point of doing anything?

And it was so obvious from the very start.

What literally? We do things to kill time and sustain ourselves until we die.

Biologically? Our point is to exist and reproduce so that others can do the same. We live and die so others can live and die.

Philosophically? We exist to grow, reach our limits, and push past them. At least, according to some people; that’s the answer I usually get when I ask.

The point is we exist to “Succeed”. We exist to “Win” in some way. And Overwatch 2 isn’t doing that. Blizzard isn’t doing that. At least according to the gaming community. Maybe they’re winning as long as they line their pockets thanks to whales and other consumers.

The PvE gameplay was okay, but I really enjoyed the in-game cutscenes and the hero interactions. I’m pretty sad that we’ll probably never see the cool Zenyatta and Talon encounter that was teased at the end of the invasion missions.

This is like half life 2 all over again. Abandoning the story at a cliff hanger.

I don’t understand your complaint. PvE didn’t work out the way they planned, so they changed direction to focus on PvP, which is and always has been the core of OW. It’s not like they charged us for a new game then didn’t deliver. The move to OW2 was free, and we didn’t lose any gameplay. We just didn’t get everything new we thought we would. Nobody bought OW1 thinking it’d grow a PvE mode one day.

What’s the point of reproducing? To pass on our genes.
What’s the point of passing on our genes? So that they don’t go extinct and gets passed on, which is important especially if it’s a desirable trait that helps the organism survive and thrive in the environment.
What’s the point of strengthening the gene pool to survive better? So that they don’t go exinct.
What’s the point of population surviving and not going extinct? …there’s no point, organisms just wants to survive and exist just because. :upside_down_face:

Asking why organisms wants to survive is like asking why viruses exist. There’s just no answer, they just do it cuz they feel like it.

Was there any story to begin with?
Even the existing bits were just for the sake of giving you reason to shoot things.

I have lost all my energy. I don’t care who destroyed the PVE. They have completely lost me.

I don’t know how there can be people who continue supporting this game.

At its core, I think I’m just disappointed with Blizzard’s lack of talent or creative ability. If I, as an independent creator said “Yeah, that release didn’t work out. I’ll just stick to what I’m good at”, that’d be acceptable. But blizzard has enough time, talent, and money to do what’s contemporary in the gaming industry. And they’re failing?

I bring up Halo and Call of Duty specifically because those games have done what Blizzard wanted to do literal decades ago. Blizzard simply tucking their tail and limping back to PVP isn’t good enough for me. Overwatch 1 had cool PVE modes in the form of the Archives missions, so its clear there’s a market for the PVE here.

But they destroyed the original game and didn’t deliver. They said they did it for the PVE and didn’t deliver. Okay, technically they “”“delivered”“” with the dumb invasion missions, but I’m not talking about this like I’ve lost money. This goes deeper than that.

But we did think it’d get a PVE mode someday. People were literally asking for a lore based Overwatch mode for years now, and the answer is “no because we can’t. we can’t do contemporary game design modes like a ‘campaign’, now accept your one mode”?

if the game didn’t become free 2 play I wouldn’t have played and met some awesome people :slightly_smiling_face:

The PVE didn’t work because they destroyed it before it was released.
