So I was playing soldier the other day and every time I tried to flank, I just got Winston in my face and about 3 seconds later I was dead… from full health to 0, no one else hitting me
When I play Winston, it can take a good 10 seconds or so to kill a target if i’m electrocuting them the whole time solo… what gives?
Hyperbole is what happened.

winston makes dmage when he jumps to you and lands nearby, also can take advantage of the shield to stay there and then deal more damage and then disengage. Good winstons are amazing doing that and can engage and disengage looking almost inmortals…they are not …they just take advantage.
Soldiers can, as well be good or bad, using the healing at the right time and then disengaging if overcomed, then looking for an advantage point and aiming at the heads.
Sadly there are always moments to run away and when to find another place, needs time to get to know when to flank and when is suicidal.

Winston’s Tesla is 60 dps, and his leap deals up to 50. He can secure the kill half a second faster with a melee.
Totals to securing a solo-kill with no additional healing in 2.0 seconds, theoretically. Not counting the short period of time in which he can deal tesla damage before landing.

Jump onto your target and punch them at the same time for burst damage. Then tesla cannon, then punch to finish off.

You can always melee as soon as it is off Cooldown. It wont increase your DPS but it also wont lower it and it preserves Ammo which means you can keep your DPS output longer then with just the tesla. I believe it actually is higher DPS when going against an armored target like Brig for example but not sure. Would need to find and ask a Winston Main about that one.

You want to be aware of where he is at all times as Soldier so you can sprint away before he lands. He is really easy to kite if you are paying attention to his position. You want to more or less bait a leap if you can manage it. Do not even bother trying to duel him unless you are already out of his Tesla range.
Also drop healing pod early. You stay in it long enough as you run to mitigate his burst. Basically pretend you are a lame Widow and just back to your team if he tries to jump you. Sometimes crossing him up is easier if he gets the jump on you.

A lot of the damage comes from jumping close enough to someone to hit the 50 damage impact plus either firing his gun or hitting a melee attack right as you land. It does 80 damage, and the difference between killing a 200 hp target and a 120 hp target is substantial when your gun does 60 damage per second: 3.333 seconds vs. 2 seconds.
A huge part of the skill curve on Winston is learning how to aim your jump pack so that you land right on top of them instead of just landing nearby.
I hate to be harsh about this too, but there really isn’t any excuse for soldier 76 to ever lose to winston 1v1 unless he gets caught below 80 hp. If winston tries to stand behind his bubble you can easily disengage, and if he tries to chase after you, soldier 76 should win that 1v1 99% of the time unless he is caught while his biotic field is on cooldown.
His biotic aura heals 40 per second, which is 2/3 of the damage that winston does. The field lasts 5 seconds and winston’s full clip will run empty after 5 seconds.
In 5 seconds, counting both the 2.78 seconds of shooting per clip + 1.53 seconds for reload, soldier 76 can deal 626 damage without even having to hit any headshots. This damage will only be reduced slightly by winston’s armor because of the large amount that the pulse rifle deals per hit: it will reduce it from 20 to 15.
Leap burst combo, where you cancel your melee with the landing animation deals a spike of 80 damage then you can shoot for about 1.5s and melee again to kill a 200hp target (provided they aren’t getting healed)

Actually thats exactly why you start a fight against a winston and similar heroes with Helix rockets. They take away most if not all Armor right from the get go.
Your prolly bad at Winston or bad at soldier or at both
Winston damage can happen frighteningly fast if you melee just before landing which is a big burst, then if the target it trying to heal over time? Mix melee’s into the fire and you’ll die REALLY fast.
The key is the engage. You mess that up? The target will probably survive. Also fight in your shield to negate enemy cooldowns and stop enemy healers getting value.
So the “leap burst Combo” is kinda like a bug, like how mercy used to be able to just leap into the air. Guess i’ll do some testing, sounds like it has some potential… … … … If so, I do kinda hope it get’s patched out one day lol
It’s just a normal animation cancel, similar to genjis m2 + dash, it could be looked at as a bug but at this point it’s really ingrained into winstons kit so I doubt it will ever be removed.
Winston is one of my goto Tanks, and I highly recommend doing this.
pretty sure you don’t have to jump melee anymore, because the melée puts a cooldown on when you get to use your tesla cannon and in that moment you lose out that same amount of damage you would have gotten if you just used tesla cannon all along.
but it’s a good way to jump and finish someone off with a quick 80 dmg.
sure it can be a good practice to allways do that so you don’t forget to do that against people with low hp or if you’re jumping into a clump of people and just 1 happen to be low, but it’s not allways necessary.
sometimes just starting to tesla cannon before you actually land is preferable.
There’s a jump and punch combo you can do when jumping on an enemy. The jump damage does 50 damage and your punch on landing will do 30, so that’s 80 burst damage Winston can deal before the engagement actually starts. Then the Tesla cannon does 60 DPS, so 2 seconds to take out the remaining 120 HP
Anyone remember his bug, where he always did full dmg on his leap no matter how far it landed to his enemy? The amount of rocketjump kills and rocketjump cards in the end, rose through the skies for a short time…lol !
Was kinda busted tho, good Winstons made so much out a little bug…
Not really hyperbole, Winston does 60 a second, so 3 seconds is 180 damage. Add on the jump and melee damage they could have taken and Winston can kill you in under 3 seconds.
Punch + Damage on landing is what happens.
Sinister knows whats up.
Get good at that, and you become scary as hell.
