I tried out the game after the SF6 colab came out in hopes to buy the Blanka skin.
I decided not to because the quality of the skin isn’t very good for the price…
That being said, I’m shocked at the state of Winston. Not his literal strength as in WR but the state of how it feels to play him.
It’s horrible and completely unfun. I have no idea how current Winston mains keep playing the game when it feels like you have to play perfectly to get an ounce of value and even then.
It’s not that he’s weak, idk if he is, I haven’t touched OW in ages, it’s the game has changed so much and Winston’s role within teamfights and how he operates in those teamfights feels very different.
There’s just SO many characters now that counter Winston or make his life hell.
That being said, what do you enjoy about it? And any tips?
Easy to counter heroes, especially tanks don’t get to be the highest picked hero by a mile. The highest picked heroes are the ones that provide the most value
Counter watch isn’t unique to Winston. Every tank not named Sigma and Zarya suffers with it in 5v5
Winston is still pretty fun to play. Especially on maps that have high ground defense. You can easily single out people. You can break up a high ground defense at the very least. Otherwise the game is mostly about targeting people out of position or tackling flankers for your team. He’s a lot better to play now that he can zap at any range, too. Even better if the other team has Widowmaker because you can actually reach her without having to commit. Thats hard to say for most tanks.
6v6 changes things a little bit. It depends on whether or not he still has his long range zap. No zap means you are usually going for supports out of position and forcing people to play suboptimally out of position by breaking up the team.
If Winston doesn’t feel good, then try Hazard.
Both of them share a similar satisfaction/excitement when diving. I always go Haz when the map can’t be Winstonized.
With Winston you have to be very careful and concentrate mainly on getting the enemy team to turn their backs on your teammates or feasting on a stranded enemy hero.
This is very true. In 6v6 I always used to jump in, but now I often jump to high ground to zap a bit or leap to a moderatly safe place near a corner so I have few seconds for cooldowns to jump again if all from the enemy team come for me.
Still too often it’s me that dies first usually I have done my job though and my teammates roll the enemy.
It is very different.
I’ve played Winston from the start and have by far the most hours on him.
You also have to keep in mind how your teammates fair. If they don’t know how to keep their distance when you go to disrupt, they get destroyed in an instant. There are a lot of matches when diving or poke+dive just won’t work. That’s when I go Hazard. It’s fun to bait with him. You can do so much with wall+lifesteal+wall climb.
There are matches when you can win just by sniping with Winston. People still don’t understand that he can shoot you from the sky. Mercy players are sometimes easy prey.
In 5v5, Winston is by far the strongest tank. And he can be pretty fun. I’m not sure where he fits into the 6v6 meta, but I can say as a D.Va main that D.Va in 6v6 is basically the same as what you are saying. You have to play perfectly to not explode.
I think tanks in 6v6 right now are a little underpowered because they didn’t roll back the season 9 changes on squishies and so the squishies are still 250 hp while the tanks went back to OW1 status. In 5v5, tanks are really strong, in most cases too strong but not by as much as people think.
Not a Winston main (or a tank main), but I find his movement the most fun out of any tank. As for getting value, I can do pretty well in 6v6 and I’m awful at tanking.
He’s got a high pick rate at top ranks so you can defs get good value with him
Winston is a good “tank” (well, he is more like a tanky flanker), but he depends on teammates contributing some damage. If coordination isn’t there Winston’s attacks are a lot less effective.
5v5. I have heard he is okay in 6v6 but that Ball is better but my information might be out of date because I do not really play much 6v6 nor do I really know many people who take it that seriously who do.
The only non tank hero that really impacts your pacing on Winston is Bastion but he isn’t really good because you/your team can bait his turret form and then dive him hard after and he just melts.
The only real difference for me in terms of how I play OW2 Winston vs OW1 Winston is that instead of only caring about my other tanks position before I dive in, and letting everything sort of revolve around us, I have to be actually aware of the rest of my team for the dive in.
