Okay I find this to sound dumb, but I think Winston might work in a Bastion Comp at least decently…
Winston can peel for Bastion very well overall against some common picks such as Hanzo or Genji. Winston can screw up Genji flanks and go after a Hanzo (I’m sure there is some things Winston couldn’t do much against)
700 HP shield with no part of the shield where Bastion is Vulnerable. This would preferable be behind another shield so that the dome isn’t melted…
Of course Bastion Comps are… well Bastion Comps, they aren’t very good. I’m mostly just wondering if Winston does actually work in said comp due to his skill set?
I used Winston once in a Bastion Comp and it worked pretty well against what the enemy team was running, however, it was probably due to just the enemy team generally didn’t seem to know how to kill a Bastion Comp…
The problem is his barrier has a 13 second cooldown and Storm Arrows have a 10 second cooldown.
Hanzo will just wait for the barrier to go down before he pounces on Bastion.
If you were D.Va you’d be able to save him from burst damage much more effectively (although if he is one of those Bastion’s that doesn’t know how to leave sentry mode he’ll immediately die when your DM runs out).
Largest Weakness of running D.va however is that DM is a short period so following burst after storm arrows screws D.va, plus no benefit of a second shield. (as well Hanzo can wait out DM)
Also, with another shield in play, getting off storm arrow would be more difficult. Hanzo has to find a separate off angle to ricochet in order to kill Bastion within the period that Winston’s shield is down.
I think Sigma would make more sense because he has ranged damage + his shield + grasp. Sure, it doesn’t have a 360 degree radius but that’s probably not necessary, it’s not like the enemy dps can be everywhere at once.
Winston can’t really provide any value besides placing barriers. It’s not like he has a ranged attack he can do while he’s with Bastion.
Winston can go off for 6 seconds and jump back to peel for Bastion. Shield isn’t 100% required… but does make diving on enemies harder.
For the most part, Winston wouldn’t always have to be with Bastion right? The high mobility makes it possible for him to go back and forth.
it’s workable. this sounds dumb obvious but how well you have to play winston is pretty much the inverse of how poorly the enemy team plays into the bastion comp
bastion comps thrive on the other team making mistakes (mostly positionally, but also with their resources, and how they engage and when). coincidentally those are the exact same things winston really likes to patiently wait for to abuse. positional mistakes, wasted cooldowns, bad split engagements, careless crossfire management
the main obstacle is when people play vs bastion “correctly” - meaning when they don’t peek bastion, save their resources for a hard 6-man commit or play passively and poke for ults that counter bastion like dragon or flux… it gets difficult for winston because you can’t afford to make judgement errors during the neutral fight. once ultis come online or once people start hard committing, your engages have to be super clean. if you start draining resources to sustain you, the bastion isn’t getting them, then winston suddenly becomes a liability compared to someone who’s stacked with bastion receiving aoe heals for free
Okay I’m probably reading way too much into this, but doesn’t that make Winston basically just Bastion in the tank category? (Making him EXTREMELY situational, and generally unhelpful?)
i wouldnt say so, benefiting from the same win conditions doesnt limit them to playing in the same manner. although in the context of “winston within a bastion comp” then you could say winston becomes the equivelant of “bastion in a normal comp” - a bit of a gimmick. workable, but still wacky, and leaving your team skeptical
