I’m trying to make the blizz launcher start overwatch with compatibility mode for disabling the Aero / dwm.exe, it kicks me out of the game randomly and “change color scheme popup” is driving me mad.
From what I have found online I currently have the “additional command line arguments” of Overwatch settings as:
set __COMPAT_LAYER=disabledwm
but it does not seem to work on windows 7.
I know how to disable it in general, and used compatibility mode in other programs for temporary disability of dwm.exe, but overwatch in particular I’m having dificulty applying this method, since Blizz launcher does its own thing to launch the game.
Does anyone know which command line argument do I have to set in launch options?
Edit 1:
So currently, the support gave me two answers so far:
They sent me a link to a howtogeek article about disabling windows 7 aero globally (not the desired solution)
and
They now think I NEED compatibility mode on to play, and asking me to send system files. (I don’t think they are reading the entire ticket before replying)
welp, as from my most recent research seems to be the only real solution that exists: I think I will have to hack the dwm.executable and delete the api of the popup entirely, answer from a guy that necroed a 6 year old forum post. hahahahahaha
Edit 2:
Support told me that there is no launch options for this,
and the hack in the dwm executable did not change my game minimizing, still happened.
I’d like to know this too as I currently manually change to a basic theme everytime I play demanding 3D games.
Also should mention that as I started this post, I found something about virtual memory allocated as possibly being one of the culprits.
Since I have 16GB of RAM I thought I would never need virtual memory so I disabled/reduced it since I assembled my current pc.
For testing purposes I decided to allocate 1024-8192mb virtual memory, will post here eventually if there is a difference in how frequent dwm.exe popup appears.
EDIT: Nope, still kicks out of the game. Virtual memory allocation did nothing.
Don’t bother too much guys, it will not give you the improvement you seek (trust that coming from those who know what frametimes are and why looking around is smoother on 250hz polling rate than 1000 (or why putting all crosshair settings to 0 makes aim easier than using even a small dot (even without an outline), amongst too many other examples).
Just get a cpu with more threads, preferably something with hyperthreading/smt(amd), not jokes such as 8400 or 9700k (for OW at least).
Good luck…!
This has nothing to do with framerates, this is about eliminating the dwm.exe popup that minimizes the game in critical moments.
Aim? Why are you bringing aim to this discussion?
Indeed, this has nothing to do with ingame performance or actual gameplay. We’d just like to know how to prevent the popup throwing us out of the game when using Aero theme in Windows 7.
By virtual memory do you mean the Windows page file?
yeah, it did no effect, same average time/intensity to dwm.exe to ask the “change color scheme”
