So most of the time when I play any of the arcade modes, instead of people doing crazy weird combos and interesting stuff, they just pick whatever is the most likely to make them win, usually with the least amount of effort required. For No Limits it’s usually all Torb, for Low Gravity it’s Widows, for Total Mayhem it’s Sombra, Winston, Moira, Mei, for deathmatch it’s Roadhog… There’s all these cool things and combos you can do but very very rarely do people ever do them, because they think winning is everything and if they don’t win (easily) they will not have fun at all. Even if people pick something interesting, if they start losing they will immediately swap into these picks. Every match is basically the same thing over and over, ad-nauseum, and I don’t get it. If there’s a challenge getting something interesting to work, it’s not fun for them because it won’t easily win. Why does this community not have fun unless they’re absolutely smashing the enemy team?
Because in most of these types of game modes, if you don’t make the optimal picks you have a really bad time.
Playing Widow in Total Mayhem is not fun. Playing Sombra is.
Playing Reinhardt in FFA is not fun. Playing Hog is.
Playing Hammond in Low Grav is not fun. Widow is.
People are also more willing to swap to more of these optimal heroes when they’re losing badly. For example I play a ton of Total Mayhem and when games are fairly even, people don’t actually pick Winston because he’s super boring to most people. But if you start dying over and over again and the other team is starting to roll you, then it’s no longer fun no matter who you’re playing, so you can at least try to pick something to win.
I always see Winston and usually Moira alongside him come out as soon as a team starts losing in TM, no matter how the match was going.
My experiences have been different. People pick Winston when they’re feeling countered and don’t want to keep dying/losing.
Source: I have more play time in Total Mayhem than your entire account probably 50x over - no exaggeration, likely 1500+ hours of time in that mode.
Dang, that’s crazy lmao. I can’t handle much of that mode, maybe like 3 games when it comes out and that’s it, cuz I just get too many Moiras and Meis and Winstons.
6 Lucios in no limits is fun. Boop Boop Boop Boop etc
It definitely has it’s share of issues, but one of the reasons I like it a lot is because it’s fast paced, but you also don’t die so easily. Small mistakes don’t lead to instant death because you get immediately focused down by the entire team and die in 0.1 seconds, or get headshot by a widow or spamming hanzo. You get to spend a bit less time worrying about positioning and just get to have some fun playing.
That said, sometimes it does turn into a barrier shooting or CC simulator, which can be extremely annoying. It does also suck that certain heroes just aren’t really viable.
Just played some total mayhem for the first time in a long time because of this thread.
You’re right, playing Sombra in there is fun. Kept chain hacking the doom. Good times. Never actually used Sombra in there before.
Chain hacking doomfists in TM is the best part of the mode.
Junkrat also makes TM not fun at all. As does Lucio. Junkrat’s ult does such a ridiculous amount of damage it kills through the increased health in TM, and it’s up constantly. You’ll hear “fire in the hole” probably 50 times a match if not more.
The most fun I ever had in No Limits was King’s Row where we had 6 Reins and the enemy had 6 Lucios.
It literally stayed like that all game. Just the most ridiculous match you’ve ever seen.
I also once had a 6v6 all Hog on Illios. It was stupid but also hilariously fun. That was more to do with my two friends I was queuing with.
But yeah, most of the time people default on OP ridiculousness and it’s boring as hell.
And Hog, and Zarya, and Doomfist. Pretty much any CC. Hog literally hooks you every 2 seconds. Extremely annoying. If you complain about these characters being played in TM (mainly Moira, Winston, Zarya, Sombra and Mei) you will be torn apart by the enemy team with a slurry of insults and just “it’s total mayhem…” as an excuse for picking the same god damn characters every single god damn game. Every single time I even hint at not having fun based on the enemy using these characters they jump at my throat like a rabid animal to tear me apart mentally and try and make me feel like utter crap. Vile community. I bet LoL community is less toxic than the Overwatch community.
You: “People want to win in a competitive game…”
Me: You don’t say… ![]()
Wow it’s like I’ve seen this exact comment billions of times before when anyone ever complains about anything in Overwatch ever. You’re so funny, absolutely hilarious.
If people can cheese they will. It is always more fun to ruin someone’s else day.
Overwatch community is 99% sadistic players.
After all, it is the same reason for why many people smurf and cheat.
The most fundamental aspect about gaming goes like this:
- There’s an obstacle
- The player finds a way to overcome that obstacle
- ???
- Dopamine
And when this aspect is no fulfilled, the games are super unpopular and hated. That is unless the game is literally as entertaining as a movie and shares similar quality of production as one, which is why most gamers can only name tops a handful of purely story based games where you make very simple decisions that can never be “wrong”
I don’t overcome a lot of obstacles, because I’m bad at the game and don’t have the reflexes and eye-hand coordination of literally every other player.
I know, thank you. ![]()
