It has been 8 years and the story hasn’t moved even a bit after moke pressed the button.
All these non canon event modes are “cute” but it is kind of meaningless to have only that for so many years if the game itself has no story whatsoever.

This is a multiplayer PvP game without a story mode.
What story, exactly?
Not sure if the story will ever move forward, but they should definitely bring back Archives.
Most of the fired staff after the Microsoft acquisition was on the creative side so I don’t think we will see major story or even cinematics going forward. They might have a hidden project with an animating studio to make a film/series but nothing has been announced (or even hinted at) yet.
did you miss all of the animated shorts, character voiceline interactions, pve missions and an entire story mode sequel that was in development before the devs decided battlepasses and 20 dollar skins was more profitable than making good content?
No, not after the MS take over. They fired the pve team and the pvp team doesnt work on stuff like this
I just play the game. I don’t see any story in game.
A PVE mode? Beyond the Invasion missions which obviously did begin to move the story forward, probably not.
If and when the story moves forward it’ll likely be through other media like novels, comics, cinematics etc. Honestly they should just outsource it to another company to turn it into a tv show.
Then you’re not paying attention to environmental storytelling, character voice lines and interactions, hero bios and lore-related skin blurbs etc. Which is fine of course. Not all of us want to engage with the lore, but it does exist. And just because most of it isn’t inside the game doesn’t mean the game doesn’t have an associated story.
I’ll be less subtle, I don’t care about story in a multiplayer PvP game, honestly. I understand some people love lore, but I don’t for games like this.
And that’s totally fine! Nobody said you had to. But why pretend that you don’t know that the game has lore?
If only we had a story-driven campaign, something like a PVE…
I kinda of lost track with all the lawsuits and mutiple people that have been leaving Blizzard for 2 years (at different times).
Do they still have writers in the OW team… ? If not, they might hire someone to release books / comics through as a collab with a publishing company but I don’t think we’ll get anything new, now that PVE has been entirely scapped (both PVE with talent tree and the story mode).
The story has moved a bit though with Zero Hour and the 3 PVE Invansion missions, but those were baby steps.
I would advise any Overwatch player on a tight budget to stop buying anything from the cosmetic shop before being sure there’s content planned after Season 12.
I can completely see them announce a new Overwatch game in the works for 2026-2027 so we face a content embargo on Overwatch again, especially if they don’t have anything game changing in mind.
It’s a 8-year old game people are slowly getting tired of, after all.
speaking of that microsoft is in a load of trouble and honestly i wouldbt be surprised if the investigation into them ends up turning into a anti trust lawsuit which microsoft has faced before
Story mode challenge, find and eliminate sojourn hidden on the map before she testifies against Overwatch.
Because they game doesn’t give any lore. If you’re like me and ONLY play the game, you get essentially no lore (which is perfectly fine for a game like this)
But there is lore associated with the game and you know that. I guess I just don’t understand your reason for coming into this thread and pretending you don’t know that. Like are you just trying to tell people to stop caring about what they care about and instead care about what you care about?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: after years of fighting with corporate (who only wanted an esport) to institute a story mode, the one the dev team was able to generate was a bit lackluster and sold very poorly. Microsoft saw this, and gutted the PVE and story teams. We are very unlikely to see any story development in the future outside of new character introductions.
Their head writer left, their staff has shrunk from job cuts, and rinsing as much monetization as possible is the primary focus.
So that’s gonna hafta be a “No” from the dev team, dawg.
They should advance the story.
Just remember it took 7 years to get a cinematic to bridge what happened from the original ow 1 when Winston sent out a distress call.
7 years for his buddies to give a response.
Story is probably forgotten by this dev team
im honestly mad they didnt finish the story like it never went beyond ironclad (or whatever the final mission was)
Ya overwatch is absolutely evil, they left mei alone for years when I’m sure they should have had data that a team was there yet no one bothered, all selfish…
