Will TF2 at some point be more popular than OW2 (or 3, etc)?

I was looking at Steam Charts today and was surprised to see that Team Fortress 2 is still the #13 game on Steam for concurrent players, with 64,552 players actively online playing it at the moment I looked it up.

Do you think that TF2 has more longevity than Overwatch, and will actually pass OW2 (or 3, or 4, etc.) for concurrent players at some point? If so, when do you think it will happen?

TF2 has heavy investment into workshop modes and allows for several unique interactions with various weapon and team comps (I think its 12 players on a team). Overwatch just has comp and qp pretty much. Workshop modes arent really encouraged like they did in OW1 (and even then it was just pointing a finger to show that the mode is there). And even if you’re losing- there isnt a role lock, you can change weapons on spawn, etc.

The ability for one player to make a difference is much larger than in Overwatch. In overwatch, unless you are leagues better than the enemy and play certain heroes you need the team to perform or you will lose.

Still waiting for TF2 actual major update since the Jungle Inferno back in October 2017.

I’m pretty confident it is more relevant to gamers RIGHT NOW.

Steam OW is maybe 20% of the PC population at most. Not even mentioning console player. TF2 is not relevant anymore in terms of shaping the landscape. OW2 is bigger and will remain more relevant for a long time.

TF2 may well have more longevity than Overwatch, but releasing nearly a decade prior means it’s still not going to ever surpass it in real-time. It doesn’t have the legs of something like StarCraft or Age of Empires 2.

Ya that’s sort of the point I’m making. Valve has all but abandoned TF2 and it still has 64,552 concurrent players. Will Overwatch be able to match that 6+ years after Bliz abandons it and there is a worthy successor to Overwatch?

We don’t know exactly what would happen next year after Bobby is ousted and Microsoft is in full control. Things could be better or could be worse.

TF2 has dedicated servers so it is guaranteed to outlast Overwatch. It should be required by law that companies release versions of dedicated servers anytime they change the build of their game or cease the live service entirely.
