She has the most interesting character design next to symmetra, And I wanted her so bad since we thought she was Athena. And you hyped us so badly when you showed her in Ash’s video. 2 heroes been released after that and none of them is Echo.
Will you ever release her in Overwatch 1, or will you keep her for Overwatch 2??
I mean we knew about doom at game launch and he didn’t make game until well into year 2…and didn’t we know about brig for a good while too before she was a hero as well?
But I will say Jeff saying she’s not hero 30 and 31 does imply (to me at least) that she’s not quite there yet but that she should be one of the earlier 6 heroes that they were working on…so I think hero 32 probably isn’t a bad guess…would also make her the blizzcon reveal…which I think would get a good amount of hype
The idea of an OW1 and OW2 doesn’t really fit with the way they have developed OW. The game is being given as a service and has an attached esports league.
What we’re currently calling OW2 will likely be a seperate mode sold as an expansion pack and potentially as a seperate game using the same engine. Think of how Fortnite has both the battle royale and save the world PvE.
It would make sense to sell as a separate product for console so that PvE only players can buy it without owning the original game. (Think Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare)
This is how I imagine they might do it, if that is the case then any character released for the PvE mode would also be released simultaneously for PvP so Echo would appear in both.
This would be good for Blizz because they’ll put in a giant community of non-pvp players into the Overwatch world and basically get double value for hero releases.
We don’t really know anything about Overwatch 2, other than that it’s supposed to have started development recently.
It might be just an expansion for Overwatch. The leaks just talks about people being hired on a new Overwatch project, and the fact that it has some emphasis on single player. It’s entirely possible it’s just a co-op focused expansion with whatever other content it includes.
If it is a standalone game, two things have to be said:
It might be a completely different genre. I very much doubt Blizzard will make a sequel that directly competes with Overwatch, not this early on, and after they spent hundreds of millions developing the competitive scene for the game. A sequel would probably focus on various missions the cast is involved with.
The game is years from being released. If it started development recently and is not an expansion, it’ll probably be 3-5 more years before we see any kind of beta, potentially even longer, depending on what they’re working on.
Another thing worth noting is that the developers talked multiple times about the fact that they want for the game - that is, Overwatch, not some sequel - to eventually have upwards of 50 heroes. I believe the number given was 50-70. We have 30 right now. And while yes, it’s possible that plans have changed, there’s no reason to believe so. The game still has a very active playerbase, and high numbers of players, and Overwatch League is earning them a fortune. Why would they decide to give up on it for no reason?
Blizzard knows how to earn money with their titles, just look at World of Warcraft. It’s what, 15 years old now?
To answer your question, yes, Echo will be released in Overwatch 1. They already talked about her being in development, and there’s no way they’re already developing complete new heroes if Overwatch 2 is actually a direct sequel to Overwatch.
You know they won’t abandon Overwatch all of a sudden once this 2nd Overwatch game comes out right? Blizzard is known for keeping their games alive. Even Warcraft 3 is still getting balance updates to this day.
Overwatch will still get content updates, Overwatch will be PvP focused and Overwatch 2 will be PvE/story based most likely by the sounds of it.
If they introduce new heroes like Echo in Overwatch 2 I’m betting they will also add them in Overwatch as a playable hero shortly after.
Just to let you know, the current engine is one of the main reasons current PVE events take so long, they’ve mentioned before that the reason a story mode would have to be on a completely different engine is that they struggle with PVE elements on this one. I believe it’s very useful for PVP but in game cinematics and PVE content don’t come easily to it.
I believe OW2 will have a different engine or a heavily modified current one.
I heard some reports that they were going to use the OW engine as a base for future Blizzard titles. So it’s very likely they use the same engine for the expansion content and integrate the modifications into the live version and the expansion.
Blizz has in the past used modified engines such as with Wow using a modified Warcraft 3 engine.
If another team was working on the PvE then it’s entirely possible the majority of their development work will be adding tools to the engine to help speed up development of PvE content.
I don’t think they need to use a different engine at all really, it would make more sense to develop some extra AI subsystems for the current engine and make some tools to speed up PvE creation than to start with a new engine.
There would then be very little reason to not keep both games updated with the latest updates from each team.
