Widowmaker tips?

The more I play Widow, the more I like her. But, my reaction times suck and when I was replays of my games I see a lot of shots where it’s like “I could have made that.”

What are some tips for getting better on her?

I don’t think I’m bad per say- I’ve been accused of aim-botting (typically when I’m on attack and I line up a head shot with a symmetra or McCree standing still waiting for the door to open so as soon as the match starts I get a eliminate to start with) But I want to get good.

getting sniped out of no where by better widows is kinda inspiring me out of spite to improve myself lol.

Had a match last night where I had 9 kills (and double the turrets from Symmetra and Torb. Since Widow’s range is so long I’d use shots to take them out.) and didn’t die at all.

Get your sensitivity right.

I have it set at 50.44 right now, should I pop it up to 100 like with D.VA and Mercy?

Whats your DPI? thats alot of sensitivity.

um, how do I check that?

Always keep your sensitivity the same with every hero. This will improve your aim overall as you won’t lose your muscle memory from switching to McCree from Tracer for example

Do you have your mouse’s software? you can check it from there if you have it.

Tip # 1
Stand still

Dominate whole enemy team with eaze, go GM in no time.
If a Winston dives you, use grapple and give him 2 shots 4head at the same time.

DPI depends on the mouse. If you use a gaming mouse, they usually come with a mouse driver/software that lets you choose the DPI. Unless its a Zowie, in which case you press a button on the mouse to set the DPI. If you don’t have a gaming mouse, I recommend you get one, along with a large and good mousemat (I use 40x30 cm mat)

Your mouse sensitivity is a combination (multiplication) of mouse DPI and the in-game sensitivity (set in OW settings). For example I play on 800 DPI and 2.8 ingame sensitivity on the hitscans and most heroes that dont require whipping around really quickly. For widow, the scoped relative sensitivity is also important.

If you were sniped out of nowhere, it probably happened because you didn’t know where the enemy widow was. In a sniper duel you gotta figure out where they are, and best case scenario is that they don’t know where you are. Then you get the drop on them. That is a case of positioning and trickery, not so much about aiming.

Start paying attention to where they are likely to be and check there when you scope. Could watch some match vids to get ideas for sniping spots.

Other hints:

  • Often times its better to aim carefully than try to snap shot. Once you shoot, you will immediately give away your location due to bullet trail.
  • After you have taken couple shots, relocate yourself, before the diving patrol comes after you. Remember grapple cooldown.

And heres a small inspirational vid from the goold old days, before OWL and before there were two hundred million shields in the game.

I mean getting sniped when I’m on other characters. For the past couple of weeks I’m normally the one going after the other widow , even if I’m on Mercy. Because I see them first.

Playing widow taught me where the best sniper nests are so when a match starts I’m looking there . It’s always fun when you kill widow on mercy or road hog.

Holy smokes, at first I thought you were a console player, but this is crazy high for PC if your DPI is anything over 100. If it’s 400 DPI, that makes your eDPI 20 000. The majority of people are looking at around 5000 eDPI.

Better to start lower and work your way up slowly.
Also, here’s a website that explains things pretty well.

my mouse says the DPI is 1600

The better widows wait for the other widow to expose their position first then shoots.

There is really no shortcut to aim, practice.

There is one thing that helped me.
I have always been a fast track aimer. I line up all my shots. I never used to flick much, and even when I did you could argue it was fast track aiming.

After watching Surefour’s aim video something hit me. He talks about predictive and reactive aiming. And I was missing that Reactive aiming part, because it never made much sense to me, until I saw his video.
Then I worked on my flicking based on what he explained in it.
So I highly recommend sitting through it even if you know all the stuff he talks about.

(the part with the counter strike clip)
That difference in time makes all the difference in who wins a widow battle.

But that was just me.

The rest is positioning and understanding where all the Widow spots are on all the maps.

Confidence is a big part of it, and that comes with practice and actual game time.

Lastly understand visibility related to corners and peeking,
Skyline had a great video that explained this, (I found it)

Oh and abuse AD crouch when you can, you know the other widow’s charge up time.

Practice a lot to get good aim.

Learn the good sightlines and make sure to move around a lot.

Learn how to respond in 1v1s.

If there is another widow, constantly think about her. Even when she is dead you need to be keeping track or else she will come back from spawn and catch you off guard.
