I’m past caring who disagrees but the devs have made this game a spam meta that is so kit-heavy against ranged players, Can’t even peak to shoot now without a truckload of spam and sticky attacks, The game is a total embarrassment that rewards fake aim, AOE, and spam than genuine skill, Just remove widowmaker already you near have anyway.
I don’t feel like you thought this stance through.
The best players in the world didn’t like playing against Widow because having to play around corners for one hero, while having to dodge the other 4, was not feasible. And there’s two facets to your claim.
Yes, it is effective to use cover against Widowmaker. If she has no sightlines on you, you’re not at a risk to be one shot. But:
It’s not like she’s static and wouldn’t try to put me in her sightlines. As Widow, I’ll put you in my sightlines and it’s not hard to do that without compromising my positioning;
You are also fighting 4 other people. To even engage with Widow, you’d have to go through them and that usually doesn’t work because Widow would be so far back and usually you can’t use cover because that’s an enclosed space, so going into a team fight in a tight space is suboptimal.
It’s an “age-old argument” because the “just use cover” argument is flawed and bad. If a map has to be singularly designed with Widowmaker in mind, I would reckon she’s the problem. The traditional maps that were unbearable because of her tend to feel significantly better to play on without Widow in the match.
Pretty much this. You use cover against Widow? Cute, so you are limited to maybe 40% of the map. Now rest of the team occupies those spots, especially tanks who you can’t win 1v1 or often even 2v1. Pick your poison - die to tank forcing you to fight or peek Widow sightline and get headshotted.
Also objectives force people to peek, you know? Otherwise they just cap the point for free xd
There are some maps where there’s corners and walls on the objective. Meka base, Oasis Garden, City Center, etc. come to mind. Where it is feasible to use that cover.
But what about Havana? Or Circuit Royal? Someone has to push the cart, and there’s no cover for that. So she’s going to likely get some value out of that - which is fine! But it’s the fact that the value is, “You go back to spawn without being able to react to this ”.
I’m not going to say these Widow nerfs that we had recently were the right ones, or that Widow is balanced now. These feel like band-aid fixes to a bigger problem.
Appratenty this essay was a nuke drop according to your buddy, So to respond, Most maps are designed against widow. Most lines of sight are blocked by objects and most verticle areas are exposed not narrow or well hidden, I feel this attempt conveniently ignored these facts therefore I stand by what I said, But I’m sure your friend worships the Nuke.
Hero like Widow just shouldn’t exist. Max range for pretty much even the longest range heroes besides Widow is around 30m. When sightlines go past that it’s just Widow vs Widow because no one can contest her in time (outside of Sombra who bypasses her sightlines entirely for free)
And those aren’t the maps where Widow is played. She is pretty much exclusively played on maps where it’s next to impossible to get to her.
Instantly removing someone from the fight without them having the chance to react to the initial attack doesn’t demonstrate skill. Skill is when you prevail over your opponent who also has a chance to prevail over you, not utilizing a kit that is by definition, overpowered, to overpower people. Sitting across the map outside of everyone else’s effective range while being free to spam instant kill-shots into the crowd interacting with each other and effectively playing another game while you get to play shooting gallery, isn’t skill.
Consistently hitting headshots is skillful, most characters can do so, however, most other characters also have to land more than one headshot to kill instead of one which means they have to consistently land more headshots and at a closer range putting themselves in more danger to do so. Them landing one headshot does not guarantee they win their duel, they have to actually showcase more aim skill and/or other skills to win duels.
Hey man, you can’t use what someone else said against me. That’s weird.
I never said there wasn’t cover or blocked sightlines for Widow.
My point was that in order to go through the routes that have blocked sightlines for Widow, you have to fight 4 other people in close-quarters which is suboptimal.
If you have to go out of your way to take specific routes that funnel you into tight corridors or routes to fend off 4 other people simply to avoid being one-shot by Widow…I would say that’s not optimal and still pretty bad that the presence of one hero mandates that.
Over 100 hours on Widow here. I don’t hate her, I just thing she needs to be adjusted a bit and the changes we got are not great.
