I loved the idea of wide queueing to remove roles restrictions for friends who have a wide skill gaps; but narrowing the definition of a wide group to only 5 divisions, and then deciding that if you’re wide queueing that you can ONLY play with and against other groups of wide queueing people only makes the problem worse.
Yes, technically there’s no NEED to have an alt/smurf to play with your friend, but you’ll have to wait 15-20 minutes PER MATCH (Source: personal experience). Which is made worse by how narrow that definition is. Previously I could play just fine with my group as we were all within the 10 divisions, now, the range is just slightly out of that 5 divisions necessary for narrow queue, so earlier this week we could play just fine, but now we have to wait 15-20 minutes. That doesn’t discourage me from making a smurf account, it makes me more likely to make one.
People who previously had no reason to smurf will start smurfing because of this. You have not fixed the smurf issue. You have made it far, far worse

If wide groups CAN NOT QUEUE with narrow groups, maybe they should just have their own seperate rankings? Food for thought.

You are right about this. The good news (at leas for now) is that those ppl have to wait a lot for a single match which may kill their enthusiasm assuming Blizzard doesn’t drop the ball first and loosen the matchmaking for them.

Your first mistake is thinking blizzard cares about match quality, at all, which they do not.

You have missed my point in its entirety. My very point is that they will simply make smurf account to avoid waiting that long. And since the queue restrictions are at 5 division instead of 10, there will be even more smurfs than before. Groups who were previously 6-10 divisions in range will now have to wait 4-5 times longer per match than they did just a couple of days ago, so they will just make smurf accounts or stop playing altogether. So either a decent portion of the playerbase will leave, or a high number of people who weren’t smurfs will become smurfs just so they can play with their friends.

I am confused. How exactly smurf accounts are going to help them if they have to wait longer?
And that is a good thing, no?

I feel like this is pretty self-explanatory. People will make new accounts and intentionally rank them lower, closer to their friend’s ranks, so they don’t have to deal with 20 minute queue times.

Ah yes, I should simply not play the game for committing the cardinal sin of being moderately better at this game than my friends. A reasonable take to be sure

But that is already a thing with or without the wide queue. A low rank dps with a mercy pocket are common occurrences.
i don’t get what fun ppl find in playing with underranked players… especially when doing it in ranked instead of QP.
it wasn’ t designed to fix the smurf issue. It was to keep you and your buddies from dunking on randos all night long.
Now, if they’d put this in all the other modes…i’d love it. But …baby steps.

…Because they made the restrictions more narrow so it’ll be even more common than before. That’s been my whole point in every post…

Agreed, good thing I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about people with a moderate skill difference. And comp is just more fun, more intense, you switch sides, actual stakes. I can’t really play non-comp anymore because it’s just not as fun

OP I said this exact point in another thread.
Why would you wait 15-20 minutes to play in a wide group when you can make an alt to play with you friend. Then when you are not with your friend play on your main?
Saying wide groups only play against wide groups to in the next breath saying they did this to make playing with friends easier and faster…uh…no.
Plus if you only use the account to play with friends won’t your ranks stay the same? As you will win and lose together.

Right??? The entire point was that it could allow everyone to play together, but instead it’s actually alienating people who USED TO be able to play together.
Another element to this that’s not being considered by the other posters in this thread is sometimes people are just wrongfully screwed over the the MMR system. The person I play the most with, I ranked with and played with, not always playing the same roles, but almost all of the same placements. We were ranked extremely far apart. In support I was ranked high silver and they were ranked low-mid bronze despite the fact that we’re near equals in terms of how good we are at support. We should be within 1-2 divisions of each other in support based on skill, and yet when we try to queue both as support, it’s considered a wide queue. We’re currently 20 minutes into a queue for both of us being support because of this.

Totally agree, my questions is “how paid people didnt think about it earlier ?” , did they really think “ho people will just wait 20mn to play a game !” that’s stupid

exactly. you cant even duo in gm+ anymore without getting literal 1hr+ ques. this only encourages smurfing if you want to play with friends in ranked ever…
and yeah, my friends who dont play all the time dont enjoy qp at all bc its too off-rails. ranked is much more predictable and easier to understand whats going on all the time. ranked is just an easier format for a casual player imo
I’m not used to blizzard communication as I just started OW2, any chance we got a hotfix or they will just let it like that ?
You can’t fix what is meant to be the way to play a game. Not smurfing is like getting the highest degree in rocket science and then opt for being a cashier. Smurfs always have more options, the game just naturally calls for it.
That’s the point. Blizz wants more new accounts made. That’s why the report system is so sensitive. This is why the wide group penalty exist.
They want you and your friends to start over, buy all your skins again, and give them more money and credit, so they can announce in two months “OW surpasses 500 million accounts!”
Yeah, someone in our group offered to go on their alt to avoid the wide group, but we declined. They didn’t mean to smurf I think. Wide group just sucks. We were only 6 divisions apart, so it wouldn’t be some hardcore smurfing, lol.
That’s our group. Just 2 members that are 6 divisions apart. The one that’s the highest has an alt that would allow us to avoid this. We chose to just not play comp instead. QP sure sucks though.
That’s what I thought. It looks like it just caters to solo queuers, which already had it easier.

That’s better than waiting over an hour in queue with a duo to lose a game because the 3 stack it put us with refused to communicate or work as a team.
Overwatch is in trouble if this is the new norm. Especially when combined with unjust bans.
It could be just soloQ and groupQ with separate sr. It’s simple, intuitive and better for soloQ and (wide)groupQ imo.
Idk why they introduced such wide things and what’s so much better than soloQ/groupQ.
