"Wide groups" can't have 4 players

Saw this in the corner of the stream during the dev update. The wide groups can’t have exactly 4 players, presumably because this would require a solo-queuer, who is automatically considered a “narrow group” to be matched with them.

On one hand, solo queuing in Overwatch is already painful enough, so not subjecting them to nonsense like cahmpion-bronze matches is probably good. On the other hand, I can see this being annoying and confusing for the average group player. Like say you’re running a 5 stack and one of the guys has to leave and suddenly you all have to either stop playing comp or kick someone out of the group, seems like a pretty bad situation to put people in. Like I think really wide SR range 4-stacks are going to be uncommon enough that you can throw a solo queuer into the woodchipper and give them a low-stakes low-quality match like this every now and again without much issue

edit: oh yeah one thing I forgot to mention is how often 4-stacks spend the entire match attempting to scapegoat and harass the soloqueuer, less of that is good I guess

Why take a fat dump on solo queue people when your group of 4 can just go to quick play?

Absolutely not. Getting stuck with a 4 (or previously 5) stack is one of the most miserable experiences the game has to offer. It should have never been allowed period.

It shouldn’t even be a thing in narrow groups either. Absolute worst experience in comp, even when you win

Yes, exactly. I’ve had matches where we’re stomping the enemy team and the group still calls me all kinds of derogatory things since I wasn’t playing what they wanted how they wanted.

“hey guys, we know the solo experience is miserable so we made it worse”

Annoying… maybe. I agree it would suck if you’re 5 and someone leaves.

Confusing… I dont think this will be that big of an issue. Other games have had similar restrictions in their matchmaking and have never really had an issue with people understanding it. Probably no more difficult to understand than today if a people form a group outside of the SR restrictions and can’t queue because of that.

I hope they implement soloQ only in the future.

Ya will just have to switch to playing qp in that situation.

Can someone clarify the issue of wide groups for me pls

I understand that solos will not be paired in these groups (I think it’s great)

But then what happens to people who play in duos for example?

I imagine the following case, we have a group with a Master, a gold and a bronze, the system finds an opposing team with players of the same elos, but it is a full stack and has additionally two silvers, so for the initial group the system Search and find a duo of silvers that play together, would they be paired in that group? It’s possible?

If that’s the case, this is going to be a big big mistake on Blizzard’s part.

A duo of silver players is a narrow group so it cannot be placed in the match you describe. What would likely happen is either:

  1. The matchmaker would find another compatible dup that is a wide group (e.g. a bronze+gold player) who average out to about the same
  2. That match is just never made and you wait longer for a better matchup. The full stack would get placed versus someone else, and you may get placed against a completely different stack or another duo+trio pair that’s closer to your ratings.

So it’s better to annoy 4 people from the player base than it is to annoy 1. It makes no sense solo q is already terrible in any competitive game just the way that it is and will still continue to be so not allowing 4 stacks seems like the wrong decision to me

Make one more friend (or one less, lmao).

Ok I got it, I got it.

Well, it seems very accurate to me, I appreciate the answer, than you.

its actually better to not let 4 people gang up on and harass 1 person

But surely this doesn’t happen that much like I know that me and my stack don’t just gang up on the solo because we’re aware they’re not going to be as coordinated as us because 90% of the time they don’t join voice which I do actually think is the main cause of harassment for solo q players with a 4 stack tbf

Wait is it possible to solo queue an all queue type of deal. Or is solo always in narrow/solo. I assume solo has the choice right?

The difference is a solo queue person cannot necessarily change their situation at will (maybe has nobody to play with or is uncomfortable with this community VERY VALID mind you)

But a group of 4 has options to avoid the situation- find a 5th or somebody else leaves, and at the end of the day special changes are taking place to make wide groups able to play in huge rank gaps anyways, you’re already getting special treatment compared to solo queue players, the least you could do is not rub their nose in crap while you negatively influence the matchmaker as well.

Solo queuers will only get matched with other solo queuers and narrow groups. So if say you’re plat you can get matched with a duo containing a gold and a diamond player, but not anything more extreme than that

So yeah 4 stacking is gone forever.
