You know what I mean? JALLA! JALLA! JALLA!
It’s not the first time a voice line has been replaced, but this is just a straight up nerf. Now she says it without any passion.
My favorite combos were:
- “Would you like another… JALLA!”
- “I find this quite… JALLA!”
- “My ultimate is… JALLA!”
Yes, I know it’s spelled “Jialat”, and it’s probably not even a noun? Who cares. I had fun with it.
What I think happened here is… The only thing that makes sense to me is… Maybe players from Singapore were saying that Echo pronounces the word wrong. So, obviously someone at Blizzard choked on their coffee, and quickly arranged a new recording session to avoid “outrage”?
I can see why they would strive for authenticity, sure. But when we already have joke characters like Torbjörn and Reinhardt (who can’t even speak their own languages), it’s a bit… superfluous?

I prefer type: echo. Jialat is just noise.
Yeah apparently they thought a minority would become upset so they sacrificed hero elegance for slang proximity - so now we have a squabbling version of Echo
Rein and Torb were cast because they sounded and matched their characters, the devs ignored the requirement of them speaking the native language and so to avoid the butchering of the pronunciation they decided to simply not give them lines in their native languages. As characters yes they do speak German and Swedish, but not in game.
I think with echo the voice actress already had to say 20+ lines in languages she didn’t know and so they likely figured what the hell and gave her lines in “singlish” and theres a big difference between not having someone speak a language in game out of respect for the language and it’s speakers and giving someone who doesn’t understand the language lines in that language and then having people running around with an incorrect representation of the language practically mocking it saying “it sounds better incorrect”.

It does. Rip the whole world?
It is a slang after all.
To answer OP…because people requested it when she came out
Slang still has a proper way to be pronounced and if you are using a language for your game you should do your best to respect it, especially if it’s not your native one.
