Why was Retribution removed?

I only just found out it ever existed, and now the only PvE gamemode is low-effort garbage which isn’t even a challenge on legendary.
I’m guessing Retribution isn’t the only actually-good PvE gamemode to ever exist, so why not rotate through them weekly?

It’s an event mode, unfortunately it’s locked behind the archives even with Uprising.

because its event specific

So? Just have it as a regular event, instead of once then never again.
I think Blizzard forgets that people stop playing the game for a while or even the unthinkable happens, a new person starts playing the game.
It’s a very inefficient way of providing content to the game, only making it available to everyone who so happened to be playing at that specific time.

The event comes back next year, tho. It’s not “never coming back”. Just be patient. While I agree we need a permanent PvE mode, you need to have an insane amount of patience with Blizzard.

It’s Blizzard and event modes.

They like keeping events contained to a short time.

Something you get use too if you played their games.

You’ll be able to play Retribution and Uprising again in April during the Archives Event. And presumably another one, as it seems they’ll keep adding a new mission each year to it

I agree though, I’d prefer the missions be permanent so we have more optional things to do.

same reason events are always timed exclusives: $$$

So, instead of spreading out the good PvE gamemodes throughout the year, they put them all in one month?
That’s stupid.

At first, there wasn’t any PvE in the game at all.

  • August - “Summer Games” has Lucioball (3v3 PvP)
  • September - new map
  • October - “Halloween Terror” is Junkenstein’s Revenge (4-player PvE),
  • November - new hero
  • December - “Winter Wonderland” is Mei’s Snowball Offensive (6v6 PvP) and Mei’s Yeti Hunt (5v1 PvP)
  • January - new map
  • January/February - “Chinese New Year” is Capture the Flag (6v6 PvP)
  • March - new hero
  • April - “Overwatch Archives” is Uprising and Retribution (4-player PvE)
  • May - “Anniversary” is every game mode all at once.
  • June - new map
  • July - new hero

That’s the usual schedule they release things in this game. PvP isn’t and has never been a big part of Overwatch, as it was marketed as and balanced around being a PvP game first and foremost.

Sadly, those wanting PvE content mostly have to wait for certain events, unless they have an expansion with a story mode or something coming someday.

Events like Junkenstein, Uprising, and Retribution should disappear. They get boring enough after a couple weeks. What Blizzard really needs to do is update the events each time around. Last year they at least added Symmetra as one of the Junkenstein bosses. This year nothing. They could have at least advanced some lore within the Junkenstein framework, such as a different mission that requires getting into the gate rather than defending it.

No, what Blizzard needs to do is have the events for a shorter time and longer duration.
If the event is annual and lasts for a month, people have plenty of time to get bored, and people can easily miss out on the event entirely by just not touching the game in a long time or buying and later getting bored with the game before they’ve even had a chance to see the event.
If the event is seasonal and lasts for a week, people have less time to get bored and are less likely to miss out on it.

That’s because it’s part of the ‘Archives’ event which was launched on 10th of April. It will most likely return next year and you can play it again.

But it is. And it’s tied to an event.
