I was watching a couple of old gameplay previews of Overwatch and Numbani used to have a sort of dusty yellow lighting and kinda made it feel like you were playing in a desert or something.
Here’s a video: h ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j6vpuRfdfU
Personally, I feel like it fits with the map and quite frankly, looks better than it does currently.
Does anyone know why it was changed?
It made the city look polluted. As far as megacities go that’s probably the more accurate lighting, but Jeff has spoken before about how depressing atmospheres in games have historically led to people enjoying the game less. Also Overwatch is supposed to be a optimistic future, so they went with the cheery lighting instead. I like it the way it is more.

I agree with alfislegend. I like the clean look a lot better
That does make sense, but to me, it kinda made it look like a city in the desert, which I believe is where Numbani’s located

I like the previous look more. Feels more like an African city. Actually had the barrens vibe from WoW and filled me with so much nostalgia.
The “Eliminated X” feed looked cooler, too.

Going on with what alfislegend said, it might have had something to do with how Blizzard wanted to represent Africa.
I believe I heard in an interview one time that when they made Hollywood, they first designed it based on their imagination. Then, they visited Hollywood and changed it to fit reality. However, they were more satisfied with the Hollywood they had designed from their imaginations and thus reverted it.
This could be a similar process to Numbani. Sure, the yellow lighting makes it look more like a dusty desert, but their idea of Numbani and Africa in general in terms of the Overwatch universe may have been cleaner, more developed etc. which the current Numbani seems to convey.
Didn’t even think of that, nice observation

Maybe they realiced that in a futuristic city pollution isnt a thing?
But no one said it’s pollution lol
I meant officially. As far as we know, it could be sand
Probably to give it futuristic feel. Numbani is supposedly in or near nigeria. Climate should be a savanna plain over there. So, realisticly there should be a lot of dust. The old map was more correct geographically. But that give you more of a low tech tatooine vibe.
Technology shouldn’t be able to modify local climate. But maybe in overwatch universe they could. Or maybe that mysterious climate change in overwatch did it.
