Why was "Find a Group" removed in Overwatch 2?

I’m glad I discovered this forum exists but why do we have to go to a forum to find groups the draconain way when OW1 had “find a group” built in? Some of the battlepass challenges also involve playing in a group, which adds insult to injury to the removal of the old feature. It was a great way to find random people for pick-up games or just chat with other players. What happened to that? The game feels less social without that and without post-game cards. The game just ends right away and there’s no time for banter. Just my 2 cents.

If anyone wants to just play some chill pick-up games feel free to add me.

For me I felt like it wasn’t used and you could never get a group for your elo. I think for comp it only let your 5 stack and if you wanted just 1 or 2 partner(s) it wouldn’t have an option. I feel like this is a pretty terrible way. Make like a website at minimum that shares your profile and standing and you can just select from options on what you are looking for. Then see your matches like a dating site lol.

You can add me on discord Aristogglez#7254, we’re an olderish and chill group of people who usually run games during the evening

Because more often than not it was being used by some maladjusted individuals as a way to seek other maladjusted individuals in an attempt to satisfy their thumb-sucking urges.

Examples include but are not limited to:
:arrow_right:Throwing/Smurfing:
Intentionally losing matches and dropping down in mmr/competitive ranks in order to stomp lower ranked players in a sad attempt to feel good about their sad selves, because they’re too much of a coward to compete against higher skilled players.

:arrow_right:Solicitations of various pathological sexual natures:
Because these people not only haven’t outgrown their thumb-sucking stage, they’re also too inadequate in various aspects to do anything about it beyond making sad little titles in a video game Find Group function.

And the 3rd type that has spawned as a result of the other types:
:arrow_right:Cash farmers: Making new accounts and leveling them up to sell to all of the above people after their accounts get banned or they’ve inevitably used up what little cover an anonymous online account can offer and need to switch to yet another one to not feel like the failures they are.

This last type is also why the “one real phone number per account” requirement was so important and helpful in combating these persistent toxic elements in the player environment. But Blizzard couldn’t even keep that up for 3 days before doubling back on themselves to remove the protections. The so-called “Defense Matrix” initiative lasted about as long as it did in game.

Anyway, Blizzard can’t moderate or censor the in-game Find Group function as easily as they can the forums, so they decided to remove it for the broken sequel. Out of sight, Out of mind.

Judging by all the game bugs and the laggy server performance and other missing-since-launch functions like User Profile lookup outside of the game, removing this is saving them the additional time and server load they can’t afford in their already disastrously managed game development state too. Not to mention the desire to avoid any more scandals and controversy after a fiasco of a year. So three birds with one stone.

Really the Find Group function in the game was a reflection of the general state of the game that could be summed up at a glance. You could get a sense of just how bad the current game environment was by the amount of these sordid titles showing up in Find Group. Now, you have to come to the forums for that. :smirk:
