In OW it’s simply more noticeable because their rendering is fairly efficient and doesn’t require much GPU power to run. The CPU is the bottleneck in nearly every modern game once you start hitting high refresh rates. Go pick up any modern game and set it to like 1024x768 on lowest quality settings to remove the GPU from the equation and count how many can actually achieve over 200fps. You can probably count them on one hand.
The reason why OW is CPU-bound is quite simple → graphics wise it is a very simple game by modern standards, so it becomes bottle-necked by CPU.
Adding graphics power after some point doesnt increase FPS because CPU cannot process it faster.
Which is exactly the case of OPs problem - his CPU is weak, old, and on top of that affected by the meltdown/spectre hotfixes.
7700 is equivalent to 10100 in terms of performance. That’s the bottleneck.
Overwatch isn’t particularly GPU intensive unless you turn up the graphics. 400 fps us pointless when there’s no 400hz monitor. Would result in screen tearing.
On a side note, i thought 144hz was enough?
144hz is enough. But Id be pissed too if I had 3090 and it could run OW only at 240fps lol
Should I get i7 quad core or an i5 hexacore for Overwatch? Which one give more frame?
Idk… 5Ghz is 5Ghz. Unless more cores really does much. Tbh most games I have seen little to zero performance gained from more than 4 cores.
“640k (of RAM) ought to be enough for everybody.” - Steve Jobs.
240hz has helped me immensely. It has gotten me to top 20-30 global in KovaaKs. Doubt I could do it even on 144Hz.
I have a gx 1080 , i9 9900k and hold 240 fps in 1080p…
I think you all are right. I stand corrected. Sorry for doubting!
Watching this video:
They can hold 400fps fixed. Time to upgrade CPU ![]()
So, theoretically an i7 should beat Xeon 6238R? Or a 3090 outperform a Quadro?
Generally speaking, processors improve 15-20% from generation to generation.
I just figured since most games are single thread that would be the case here. But turns out Overwatch actually is well optimized for multi-threaded performance. I don’t think a Quadro would help much since it’s only real benefit is double precision and large memory pools.
Also, I think your last statement is only true from a number of cores perspective. Core clocks and die sizes have barely moved in 4 years.
I think Gates said that.
Generally speaking, processors improve 15-20% from generation to generation.
Thats not case with Intel, cause they like to joggle with names with all their misadventures related to the new lithography.
7th gen is a new stepping of 6th gen. Before users would not even know that CPU’s can be different under same name, but nowadays its whole new generation lol
LTT has several videos stating that CPU’s are going to be a bottle neck for 3090 cards.
Yeah. The only way I can pin the 3090 to 99% utilization is at 5k resolution.
They’ve been on 14nm for like 5 years now? Kinda ridiculous.
Lower the settings mah lad, i can hold 400fps low-medium settings with RTX 2060 super, R5 2600 4.09 GHz + 16GB ddr4 3000mhz memory.
It is not. You cannot compare clock speeds between two different processors.
I think it’s because you have a 6 core CPU.
Yeah but there’s been some architectural changes lately.
For example, Ryzen 4th gen ones introduced the unified cache which means instead of separate cache for cores, all of the cores have access to the total cache. It improved the IPC with lower latency. Intel is stuck with same architecture for long time so in general people don’t see significant performance gain. Largely since most gamers don’t use PC for Adobe Apps or similar things for encoding and stuff.
Although people are saying CPUs will bottleneck the 3090, Ryzen 5950X will solve that. But you don’t really need more than 4 cores for gaming (I might be wrong). Unless you run tons of software at the same time for some weird reason.
Damn can y’all peeps buy me a new CPU I only have a Ryzen 7 2700X. :^|
