Why This Mercy Patch is Secretly a BUFF

eskays video perfectly covers how this nerf made mercy stronger, to everyone complaining about her being unplayable is wrong, is she less fun? maybe? is she less viable, anything BUT that, if anything shes even more viable.

Whether it’s a buff or a nerf, it’s a lot less fun.

the funny part if its a big buff they’ll just revert the changes to how she was

worst thing is they’ll keep it this way then nerf healing heh

you might be right, however pre nerf and even buff mercy is not FUN to play against, same with sombra meta or ball meta or doom meta or hog meta, it is not fun to play against them

I think it is a buff, and a pretty chunky one.

And that is a problem, since when you make a hero less fun, and THEN have to push a bunch of extra nerfs on top, it just sucks.

And they will have to push a bunch of extra nerfs on top of it.

yea i hope not… be a double whammy. i mean it would suck and it is what it is

but these forums… can you imagine if she got nerfed again

Tbh, I doubt they will go with a revert.

Instead I’d expect something like

  • 1.5sec GA, down from 2.5sec
  • 20% Recovery Passive, down from 25%
  • 47% slower Valk GA movement speed, to match normal GA movement speed

yea maybe a weird mini rework again. i mean its not a rework but tons of changes

Tbh, I think if they just nerfed Sojourn, Widow, Hanzo enough, then the meta tier concerns about Mercy would mostly disappear.

The recent set of changes made to Mercy was described in Blizzards summary as a nerf

I would describe the recent set of changes to Mercy as a set of nerfs that gutted her

I’ve always thought this argument was stupid unless it’s extreme cases like pre-rework Sombra where she could outright disable you for 6 seconds. If a hero is fun to play against, they probably aren’t doing their job or are so bad to the point of not even posing a threat.

It’s just the “now you have to think more” take, but turned into a 6 minute unnecessary video.

Cool, that amounts to less engaging and interactive gameplay though. It functionally means standing around doing nothing more frequently, nothing except hold a mouse button down and get bored.

Other characters are actively aiming at all times. Mercy is not. She makes up for her lack of interaction via aiming by having very frequent movement interactivity. This keeps players of her interested and engaged instead of bored out of their minds.

They never revert, they’ll just find a way to make Mercy even less fun to play.
Maybe they’ll put damage boost on some sort of cooldown.

She IS less viable. That buff doesn´t work with the nerf. Watch this from Sty.

how does that equate to less engaging when you have to think more?

Because thinking “nah, looks dangerous I won’t go for that”, and just staying where you are with the beam on someone isn’t exactly engaging play.

With a lot of heroes, you are tossing up different things you will do, here you are tossing up a choice between action and inaction - and if the game is designed so you end up with inaction being what keeps coming up, that isn’t… great.

It is less engaging.

“C’mon guys, it’s a buff”
This part is true.
But no one was asking for Mercy to heal more. Or to change her passive. All they needed to do was nerf her movement. “see how that feels before we tip the scales back the other way” then look more at the beam (which does still need looked at, apparently)
So now hiding is encouraged.
And you can tell she’s not a Mercy player, she didn’t point out how they nerfed the mobility. Then in the same patch notes buff her mobility playstyle with a self heal that promotes being out there. It keeps her “the same” but it also makes little sense.
So, Mercy has to hide more. Promoting more pocketing. That thing everyone expected to get nerfed.

I think Mercy is gonna be a in a weird place until we see at least one of the two next “mercy-like” supports in a match.

Think of it in terms of time spent actually physically doing a thing that takes effort in the game.

Every character in the game, when their various skills etc are on CD, still has to engage in actively focusing on their aim, 100% of the time.

Mercy on the other hand does not do that. It is literally a piece of engagement that is taken out of the equation in her gameplay, which is unique to her. This is why she was given a skill that could be used so fast and so frequently, it replaces the lack of engagement that her lack of aim has compared to the rest of the cast.

When you increase the CD on that skill, what you are doing is just increasing the amount of time that Mercy players are not able to actually do anything at all. This increase of 66% to the CD of Guardian Angel is a massive decrease in how interactive and engaging she feels. During that extra 66% time you have no options, you are just standing there, holding a mouse button, with no other form of constant engagement you must really be concentrating on (at least compared to the rest of the cast).

This is why it was received so poorly by Mercy players. It was a significant increase in boredom as a result of the significant decrease in engagement. Whether or not she is overall buffed or not this remains the same problem.

To emphasize this, if it turns out Mercy is too powerful she’ll just get nerfed. Being stronger isn’t a merit, it just means she’ll be even less fun in the future.
