Why the new Mercy GA (not SJ) is actually good

The meter just doesn’t need to exist. All of the positives you’ve pointed out are related to the new directional controls. The meter, which was supposed to be a form of height/distance control, is just a waste. Speeding it up just makes it pointless because you’ll always do stronger jumps anyway. Having it slow just adds limitations. There’s really no pro or reason to keep the meter, even with changes. If they want us to have better height/distance controls, a stop momentum feature or a feature where holding jump propels you further (until it reaches max or you let go) would be better alternatives than the meter.

The only thing I’d add to the directional controls is that some people will never like controlling the direction with the mouse. A toggle for alternative controls such as only using wasd for directional control could be an alternative option for people who are willing to sacrifice the added precision given by the mouse controls for a control system that works better for them.

rule #1: if it isnt broke don’t fix it

rule#2: if it doesnt work revert it and leave it until you have a working idea.

by disliking rez and demanding entire hero rework, mechnaic rework of entire game, and make game have passive healign as a whole?

casue thats not a “implement it properly” its crazy talk

After that give this new GAJump equivalent or better power as the old SuperJump/Slingshot, and give it a less tedious input mechanic.

What percentage of Mercy players do you think would really insist SuperJump/Slingshot was still a better choice.

I’m thinking like 1-5%

again nobody (maybe a tiyn minority?) ever wanetd it changed at all.

majority learned to use it.

minority of them never actually use it except for fun.

again its nearly ever used in any comp once you go up to where ppl have actual aim because its suicide.

and it isnt hard to learn SJ in a weekend if u try.

instead they butcher slingshot, make it more complicated, and then fumble the actual SJ which was entire reason to change it in 1st place?

again Mercy has actual issue doing her job of keeping ppl alive and contributing…her mobility was never an issue and shouldnt of had time wasted before fixing other important issue.

I think your sense of scale is off.

You’re acting like maybe 10% of Mercy players is “All Mercy players”.

And that’s assuming that Overwatch 2 pulls in zero Mercy players from the 2018/2018 era. When the game was 3-5x more popular.

And really for Mercy players that don’t mind either way, as long as it works well. They aren’t really a factor in your argument.

its not.
tell me look at OW1 mercy then look at ow2 mercy (b4 her SJ changes at all)

what doesnt work in OW2? what is the ACTUAL issue with her doing her roles job?

casue it sure aint GA/SJ.

you can literally play game w/o using either SJ or slingshot.

you can’t keep ppl alive when dmg taken was increased and yet u still do static 55 hp/s ST w/o any other way to heal and a ST amp thats basically a lesser Zen discord.

thats why it should of never changed base function.

They have settign for mercy for her GA beam priority…they EASILY could of made it that way for SJ…but they decided to mess entire thign up for a clunkier version?

what if the meter worked backwards? starts full and runs out as you fly further, of course you’d still keep at least some power to jump up, say, maximum range for an SJ rez, that way you could fly towards a far away soul and still commit to rez without worrying about going out of range

Well I’ll give you this, I now agree with the view that it should have been optional to have the new GAJump or the Legacy SuperJump/Slingshot.

And if they wanted to remove the Legacy version, they should have just waited until the new version was good enough.

this wouldn’t go throguh w/o issues.

their direction is just making it a mess.

they should just code 2 version in game, let user select which they want access to.

literally make every1 happy that way.

they can’t do that because of how the coding works, currently in beta 2 you can still crouch glide but what prevents SJ is the way they coded the camera to interact with GA and the fact that bunny hop is based on the meter and not 15m baseline

for there to be a toggle they would need to change the coding fundamentally, they need to decouple facing camera direction and they need to put bunny hop (spacebar) back into hard 15m

this is very different from GA’s options that simply replace one variable with another, not to mention the fact that if they want to test learning curve why would they even allow for there to be an option in the first place?

people need to realize that this is a beta, it’s meant for testing and gathering data, yes some of us paid for it but they never said the product was finished or meant to be for the player’s enjoyment, that’ll happen on october or whatever

I think that would make more sense honestly…it makes no sense that you get A TON of extra distance on an already max-range flight, and hardly ANY extra distance on a short range flight…

Like being able to go 50m across the map with a single button press is nearing absurd, and being unable to hop a few meters past a target in your beam range feels terrible right now

pretty sure literally nobody assumed it was.

most of us doubt it’ll even be ready for live by the oct they said.

yeah I agree, it doesn’t make sense from a gameplay perspective either, why would you give even MORE movement after basically crossing the map? glad we can agree on something for a change

So just code 2 versions, or turn on and off certain features. Or make it so it’s basically “2 seperate heroes” and you get to go back to spawn to swap it.

It’s not actually that difficult if they can ship a .EXE file change.

This… this is satire right? Because I am laughing…

it’s not difficult but it’s very cumbersome and could create bugs that are harder to squash due to the interaction with other systems in the code, stuff like this is never just clicking a button and if on top of that we’re talking about a beta then it’s even more delicate

could they do it on live? they could but if they’re trying to solve a problem why would you have the option to keep that problem in the game? There’s an undeniable fact that works as a subtext to this whole discussion, devs think live SJ is problematic, whether you agree with that or not is besides the point, the bottom line is they have decided it’s problematic and it has to go, the reason given was that it wasn’t intuitive enough for new players to find out on their own and tbh we can’t deny that

what is the benefit of keeping the problematic mechanic in game then? furthermore, considering how different it is, Mercy would play entirely different so playing against mercy is basically a coin toss, yeah it might keep some people happy but ultimate it’d make the game as a whole harder to learn

OP very well describes how new GA is good. People are just looking at what they are losing, but if they try to look at what they are gaining, it is absolutely phenomenal, more versatile, less quirky. Same happened when they changed Lucio wallride. And same is happening with Moira too

People will accept it more and more with time imo

I’m not against taking it out, but it would help a lot for public relations if they didn’t do it until the new version was “just as good or better”.

right, I don’t think they would have pushed it to live as it is, well maybe as an exp card but then again, this is the beta so, why not?
