Quite simple really.
You can usually tell from the first 5 mins of game play whether it’s a win or a loss. So why do you get penalised for leaving? Why should you have to stay just to lose?
Sure, once in a blue moon you may make a miracle come back but it’s very rare. So why such a penalty? Why be forced to stay just to lose… is it so the other team can get their satisfaction or what?

I’ve won a lot of games that seemed hopeless. The issue though is the fact that not everyone shares your mentality. If you want to play competitive you should consider yourself committed to that match until the very end. When you leave you’re making the experience for 11 more people less fun. I mean maybe the other team will like it. But personally I prefer good games where I feel like I’m improving as a player, over some unbalanced 6vs5 stomp that’s EXTREMELY boring.
I actually wish the penalty was more harsh.

Because you cant really tell in the first 5 minutes. I’ve been stomped the entire game just to make a last stand at the very end and win it. You literally cant know especially in the first half or so of the game like you say. If anything the leaver penalty should be harsher imo

I assume you mean Comp.
You chose to play that mode. Everyone is around the same skill level (unless they were boosted, which is lame but w/e). So you are supposed to work your hardest. People who leave mid-match are not team players and deserve to be deranked faster.
It’s a team game with a countering gimmick. Be level-headed. Synergize. Make switches. Work together. That’s all a part of being skilled (yes, skill is more than mechanical aim). So if your skillset doesn’t include the capacity to preserve/play, you are at the wrong rank.

The penalties are a joke atm, which is why so many people still leave. They are not harsh at all, leaving too many games should result in not being able to que for x amount of time, similar to comp. Hopefully then people wouldnt quit so often after losing 1 fight.

When there is 0 communication and no team work and people run in like headless monkies, death after death with random team selection - where picking to counter is non-existant. It IS a loss. Comp or non comp, it’s rare that I see a come back after I call it a loss. It’s not hard to call either. As I say, headless monkies.
It’s quite rare I see come backs unless you’re in high level comp like diamond+.

That you get tilted over sarcasm? Can’t tell an obvious answer? “Useless and non-informative.”

Well because it’s about trying. About teaming up and not giving up. I understand being penaltied for leaving for internet failure is annoying, but if you leave just because you feel you’d lose, i’d love you to be banned for days. It ruins the gameplay for everyone. Don’t. Ok.

Leaving a match is essentially throwing it. Even if you think your team sucks and will lose, leaving is a form of gameplay sabotage.

That’s the problem, there is no teamwork. No one communicates, no one strategises. Nada. So at that point where you have a mercy running in 1 v 5’ving the other team… it is a loss. So why stay just to lose guaranteed. These are like ‘text-book perfect’ answers but in reality, they do not hold up.
You guys make out like every game is like a movie battle scene, like the finals of League where the battle is intense and a struggle (but good & fun). Where teamwork is amazing win or loss but it’s just not like that. I’m talking about where you have absolutely no concept of team work where anyone chooses anyone for the sake of it… where everyone runs in on their own and gets flattened. THAT is when you can call it a loss and that is usually around 5mins in after trying to attack or defend… after you sus out the enemy team and their capabilities against your own. There is nothing fun about going against an inpenetrable defense to insta-die. There is nothing fun about trying to defend against a steamroller attack where you’re wiped out instantly.
So why stay for that?

1- By queuing for comp you’re committing to try.
2- The matchmaker thinks you’re at the same level as that Mercy running in 1v5. Maybe it’s because you keep giving up.

How can you be certain? I’ve had fights in competitive where it had seemed like a loss the first round, where we’ve done changes the second round and ended up winning.
It’s never a given that you’re lose by just judging the first few minutes of the fight.

I understand your frustration in losing and having no communication. What i in these situations is trying to figure out what is going wrong. Mostly people are going in solo, to many dps going solo or no grouping whatso ever. There is not much to do but spamming the group-up button, but i try to do that and sometimes people do realize they have to. I admit that in quick play you can get teamed up with 5 idiots while the other team is dominating.
In that case i try going sombra or junkrat or tracer or widow. With sombra and tracer i get places quickly and try taking town one by one, or just distracting them so your team can take some hits. It might take your life, but your team might actually hit someone in a while. With junkrat i try to play when the other team is grouping up nicely, so i can hit them easily and damage quickly to bring them down together. If it’s really bad and nothing is working, i just switch to widow or ana, practising snipes. It has to happen some time.
Another problem is that some players think there is no teamwork, while they often are the person that is not initiating teamwork. Going in alone and blaming your team for not grouping up is the main reason you think your team is not there. You can group up with one of your teammates and join them wherever they are. You now have a little group of two persons. With some luck others will join. You can even try to lore them with waving, dancing or voicelines towards the objective. But of course thats advanced players bussiness.
Try different techniques to earn your teammates trust and group up with them, rather than commanding them to group up with you. You might still lose, but atleast you had some training. You don’t learn, if you don’t fail.
Keep it cool

Because not only are you now guaranteeing they lose, it’s very apparent that you’re the type of person who needs an incentive to stay.
You’re going to lose some. NOBODY wins all their games. Stay in, put in the time and “suffer” through the loss. Nobody on the other team needs to see it to the end, but your team deserves the chance like any other team to win even if YOU think it’s hopeless.

I’m always game for that. I like harsher punishments to things that are still problematic. (I’ve played with and against a few leavers in season 9). Though I would feel sorry for people who have decent internet overall, but they are just unlucky a few times in a season by living conditions accidentally forcing them to leave. These guys would take unnecessary punishment.
I can’t speak for others, but the power in my house can turn off a few times in a month if there are a lot of thunderstorms. Same with my internet access.
Because you are trashing your team-mates SR.
Why?
Because if the match-maker was doing its job correctly, it balanced teams assuming a 6 v 6. If this was the case, a 5 v 6 is clearly unfair and will most likely result in a loss for the team with less players.
Why not cancel the match with no penalty? Well why not just leave everytime you think you are going to lose so you or your team/group) never lose SR? The enemy team would never gain it either and you just wasted everyone’s time again.
Why isn’t all this immediately obvious to you?

Just imagine they allow this. Imagine you are doing a good game, but you aren’t waiting for me, the healer, or the DPS is not been healed as he desire, he get upset and go, even the game wasn’t lost. Now you are f*cked. It will be the armageddon, the only thing worse would be activate the friendly fire.
That’s different. That’s leaving because you’re not getting healed… not because there is a lack of team work, comms or strategy.
