Why Profiles auto private?

Why are career profiles automatically set to private?
Shouldnt they be public first and then for people that actually dont want them to check there stats they can change it?

Put your opinions on it and reasoning on why it is auto private here.

Decreases the amount of people complaining that someone is bullying them for their profiles

I am pretty sure that most people in lower ranks don’t even know their profiles are set to private. I agree that the default option should be public.

tbh i get that but shouldnt people who actually care about that manually set it as private?

Most people as you said don’t even know about their profiles so they don’t know to set it to private or public

Easy. It has to be set to friends only by default. Not for technical reasons but for community reason. The community proved itself to be toxic and attack people over their profiles, it’s why they were hidden in the first place.

Even though everyone knows they are default private, people still like to claim you have something to hide when it’s wither people don’t know it’s private by default or too lazy to care to change it. Or they don’t want it changed because they don’t want to be a target. Either way, you don’t know why it’s private.

BUT if it was public by default, then that targeted harassment would be “more justified” because they actively chose to hide their profile. They are obviously throwing. They intentionally his it so they could play their troll heroes. Right now, you can assume the best, but the other way, people wouldn’t only assume the worst.

Edit: Like that vvvv

Something to do with legal stuff apparently.

Personally, I never liked private profiles. It only gives people more options to try abusing the matchmaker and/or get away with cheating.

These people are pampered too much.

It’s amazing how these people are, and treated truly like snowflakes that even room temperature is too harsh an environment.

The bar for toxicity just keeps getting lower and lower. :man_shrugging:

Because people would constantly be typing “wHy is yOUr pRofile priVate???” instead of playing.

You know I been here a long time, and it’s been a long while since I seen a thread like this and now that I think about it making them private by default was a success.

Alot of the “play this hero now or I report you” talk has died in game, and it seems toxicity aimed at player profiles has gone down to the point I almost forgot that used to be a part of my daily life in overwatch. Dont miss it one bit.

Keep em private by default, it’s working!

Not agreeing or disagreeing with your statement.

Just wanted to chime in that the snowflake-room-temperature analogy is a REALLY bad one. All snowflakes melt above the freezing point, of course they’ll melt at room temperature.

Pretty much making a point why they exist.

Because anyone that’s checking your profile for stats is probably someone that you don’t want checking your profile for stats.

Ie, only annoying players do this and the only reason to have your profile public is to validate yourself in the eyes of annoying players. It does nothing else. If that’s what you want, feel free to switch it.

Agree, I first played in february and I didn’t notice that my profile is private until I asked someone to judge my stats. Blizzard should make it public and it’s personal decision to keep it private or not.

It already is a personal decision. You chose to make it public, didn’t you?

I did, though at first I seriously don’t know that it was private (only for friends).

Once upon a time, when private profiles didn’t exist, toxic comp players harassed others based on hero play time to the point of threatening to throw games or continue non stop harassment all game. It was literally the exact reason they were implemented and why they are private by default.
