I understand Priority pass now. Thank all who helped me on that thread.
Meanwhile,
I thought why even have it in competitive?
(Not to sound smug)
If you are so good at the game why even select a role in competitive in the first place?
“You talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?”
It’s competitive right? Players usually compete when they have a well rounded game.
While playing competitive, everyone should queue in as flex. If you aren’t ready to flex in competitive maybe you should practice flexing in 2-2-2 QP.
Priority Pass may have a home in 2-2-2 QP, but not in competitive.
Truly I am not sure, I cannot speak for high elo. However for low elo I think its to help people pick the roles they want.
I’m not sure I understand this statement. This is like someone saying they’re really craving a cheeseburger and you reply saying “If you love food so much why not just eat some pasta?”
Do you agree with me? Why select a role in competitive in the first place?
Steps:
- Go into competitive
- The system assigns you a role
- Play
I assuming it is because of wait times. By “help people pick the roles they want” I am referring to them spending less time waiting.
However I am in plat so I am not sure how bad are the wait times in higher ranks. I am also not sure if this is meant for high rank or not.
Role que has by and large always been about forcing people to play things they don’t want to play. Instead of changing the game in some way to make people enjoy playing support/tanks more they just force us to do it and dangle a free loot box in front of it.
Which has led to a lot of people who really don’t care or are really bad at playing the role to pick support/tank. WIthout role Q we are by and large back to the days of 6 people picking DPS and refusing to switch.
Not that I am a huge fan of Role que, I find it limits the game a lot. Especially if you have a leaver you can’t make a choice to fill the slot. But it also drastically limits the tactics of the game.
It’s like the difference of playing Poker with 4 suites of cards, or 1. If all you have are spades… it gets pretty boring.
Why would want to go into a team game with people in the role they don’t want to play? There is this strange projection on the forums here that everyone is a DPS main and anyone playing tank or support is just ducking DPS queue times.
but there are tons of support mains out there who ONLY want to play support and at least a dozen of us tank mains.
Hopefully the priority pass makes those who dabble in off role try a bit more. Being right now a lot of players will lock certain heroes in tank or support, then play them like it’s DPS… as in poorly.
Do you agree with me or not?
Competitive should always have been designed as flex. No role selection. Just play what the system assigns you. That is the challenge of competitive mode play.
They did float that as an idea.
People didn’t like it, and wanted it to be a choice.
I think they would lose players from it though, and that is bad, when you are running a game.
Some people only like a certain role or certain characters and want to get good at only those specific characters. They want a competitive experience and have a preference and there’s nothing wrong with that.
The people that didn’t like it can’t “walk the walk” then.
They are afraid of the idea more than not “like” it.

Not a huge fan of being assigned a role by the system. But I agree flex is the way to go even if it resulted in some bad results. Frankly they just need to over haul the LFG system. If groups were more consistent and better a lot of problems would of been solved.
But they quietly gave up on that big “social update” they were talking about. Something was supposed to happen after the Endorsement system way back in 2018 but the “run” part of their plan just vanished without a word.
I’ve said it before but Guilds/Leagues/Clans would of helped OW a lot in giving you consistent people to play with and make it possible to have competitive league fights.
We have 2-2-2 Quick Play and other modes for that.
Competitive Overwatch should be a different animal. Competitive Overwatch should feel a bit uncomfortable to those that are not comfortable playing other roles. Players play competitive for the challenge to climb. Climb as an Overwatch player not as a specific role player.
To the Dev team:
What are you afraid of?
The community saying flex only competitive is too hard? :waaa!

It would fix queue times once and for all.
You don’t bring your best “piece” to competitive Overwatch. Overwatch brings the entire competitive experience to you. Competitive should be a test to see if you can play well no matter what role the system assigns you.
Still doesn’t change things from a game designer point of view though.
Having them abandon the game isn’t a goal of Blizzard.
That’s an opinion and your entitled to it, but your opinion doesn’t dictate what competitive means to everyone else. If I only play like 8 heroes and I want to play with others that take the game a bit more seriously then I’ll play competitive.
I don’t have a rank in those modes and they people often don’t take it as seriously.
It’s probably to make people play other roles.

Nah, it’s more that trying to force people to play a given role by way of RNG doesn’t make the games better.
what maters is the game play for all 12 in the server, not some smug hahaha look the X main can’t play the Y role that well.
as forced RNG to what role you get could quickly end up with everyone in off role, no one really happy about it. Just wondering why the DPS main is on support, when the support main is on DPS.
That’s what happens at like a job, not what you do in video game people play for fun.
Sounds like those players aren’t ready for a real competitive game design.
Play Overwatch not DPSrolewatch.
