Why play this game?

First off, the gameplay itself is fun, I am enjoying that side of things.

So… The problems with Overwatch 2 right now… What kept me invested and what kept me around in OW1 was simply earning rewards in the game, while the gameplay is fun there needs to be something to earn. The battlepass has some things sure, but it took me 2 weeks to complete it and the value of the items are way too low for there to be much interest, out of everything in the pass the only thing that interested me was the Genji skin but it’s obviously not worth the price so the battepass really did nothing for me.
It’s weird how lootboxes where I probably would get nothing interest was more worth playing for, since at least I’d get some coins if it was a repeat item.

The other things that kept me invested or got me to return if I lost interest was new content whether it was new skins to earn, new heroes to play or new maps to explore. But now there’s no skins to earn, only skins to buy, there won’t be new heroes to play in the future unless I take two weeks to grind for them or pay for them so what else is there now? Even if I cared a ton about my competitive progress I won’t even see any of that until 7 games are played.

The monetization was necessary, I get that, but the prices are so high and there’s nothing interesting or no way to earn coins in-game, so I don’t see this game keeping my interest unless some changes are made.

Monetize the battlepass but take the new heroes out of it and/or lower the prices by at least 50%, more people would buy stuff and Blizzard would still make money.

You answered your own topic question there.
Games were always played mostly for fun, the end.

Gotta weigh the positive vs the negatives, the gameplay is fun yeah, but it’s not fun enough to keep playing without gaining anything or working towards something.

Fun it would be enough for me.
I play games for 3 reasons:

  1. Fun.
  2. Relaxing (mostly from a full day of work and/or Study)
  3. Self-challenge, on a rank system.

If you are having fun it seems enough for me, and it answer your topic question:
“Why play the game?”

OW2 is not fun for me, not challenging and not relaxing. I hated it and uninstalled in the first week. (I was main support)
If it was fun to me I would keep playing it.

What’s the fun part varies from person to person, but if there is nothing to gain whether it’s progressing a story, leveling up or unlocking new cosmetics or whatever, then a lot of the fun is gone for a lot of people, there’s no sense of accomplishment and no reward for doing well.

When I play for the sense of progress or to play with the new content, what is there for me to do when there is nothing to progress and new content will be locked behind a VERY overpriced paywall?

If just enjoying the PVP is enough that’s great for the ones who feels that’s enough, everybody enjoys different things. PVE might save the game for me, but really depends on how it’s done, I’m just hoping because I actually really want to love this game as much as I did years ago.

The progression is awful. But it’s always what you look for when you game.

You can stay the course or see what wonderful, or more likely, worse changes they bring for season 2.

The good f2p games keep you and friends coming back for more.

The bad grindy ones hop in, if it feels stale then hop out

Okay, so you answered your own question in the very first line of your post…“First off, the gameplay itself is fun, I am enjoying that side of things.”

See, these kind of reasonable, thought-out posts where you bring across your complaints like an adult, I can get behind because a dev can actually make sense of it and understand and address your concerns.

You did answer your own question, but I find the game extremely fun as well - I’m not paying $19 for a skin though. So indeed if they adjust the battlepass rewards and knock down those skin/bundle passes by a bunch, I’d say that their monetization plan would be decent.

The days of players enjoying a vanilla TF2 game is long gone, at least for a multiplayer experience. Every single person on the planet would prefer a type of progression system, even if its just skins. Hell, when I played wow and completed the heroic raids at the time, I would spend most of my time in game collecting transmogs. The value of collecting and the idea of progress is etched into every human. We enjoy collecting, we enjoy progressing. Even halo 3 had these types of progression systems that were totally free. My only suggest, and repeated phrase, is to remove all the free items from the battle pass and replace them with loot boxes that can only roll on legacy items from OW1. Simple. No gambling. No way to buy loot boxes, and you can bring alot of old items into the new players accounts. All the new content should be locked behind the P-Battle pass.

The gameplay is fun because the game is fun, you enter a match, pick a hero, try to get better at it and win more matches. That´s the only way that people can play overwatch for a long time

Are you playing overwatch just to get cosmetics, use them twice and then you quit until the next cosmetic releases? that doesn´t make sense at all

Both of them are gonna keep getting released, there´s a new tank and a new map coming in december

A sense of progression and rewards are basic ways of keeping people engaged in playing games, the gameplay is not enough alone to keep a large percentage of the playerbase interested.

Maps helps, but new heroes needing 2 weeks if you play A LOT or 3-5 weeks for casual players makes them basically unavailable for those of us who returns to the game for them.

Like any other F2P game, the part of the playerbase that only play the game because of cosmetics are gonna need to spend money. Normally people play the game to get better at it, or just enjoy normal matches

Yeah sure, removing them from the BP is better in my opinion, but apart from that there´s nothing much that can be done. Bringing levels back is dumb since there are no more lootboxes. Maybe add heroes mastery levels

I think the battlepass if it was adjusted/made cheaper and heroes was taken out of it could be a decent compromise, it gives people who need progression and rewards in order to stay invested a reason to come back to the game and they still make the money they need to make, possibly even making more money as more people would buy it if it cost less.
