Why play dps when you can support?

The monthly question: Why play dps when you can do half decent damage as support, have quick get aways/escapes, speed abilities, flying, healing etc. What benefit is there to play a dps over a support?

Better mobility, burst damage, or range.

Despite the name, DPS are not solely about damage, DPS specialize in securing kills which supports can struggle with.

Cuz I’d rather pick Widowmaker.

Outside burst dmg heroes like tracer hanzo echo pharmacy widow ashe soj there is little point in playing other dps outside you are a devoted main

Genji(he used to be burst dmg now most of the time he is a kill secure or distraction with a good ult esp when grandma juice)

Junkrat ( mostly it’s just ex mains of this hero who want to make fun of others by still playing him, outside noobstomping and tank busting)

Reaper ( i think he is one of the weird cases that has actually gotten better with all the changes , still he is more for tankbusting on focus fire )

Mei mostly to annoy tanks

Torb for tankiness

Sym to throw harder than everyone else

Sombra to be a ,:face_with_symbols_over_mouth: to everyone in the lobby and non bunker tanks

Bastion cause you don’t know what to do or tankbusting.

See what the trash solo tanking 5v5 has done plus s9 garbage patch to the game.

Made half the roster of dps only useful for surviving against tanks and tankbusting.

This is not favourites to burst heroes it’s just they have managed to survive all the trash changes better and retain identity somewhat while others lost it to tankification pandemic of the game.

But I’m sure we will manage to somehow villify the still able dps for their burst and make them clowns as well.

Cause one thing this community is so good at is suffer as I have cause balance doesn’t mean. Everyone performing at their best skill expression but being equivalent to being as bad as possible equally.

Why I play dps I’m.lucky enough my two mains are burst dmg tracer and hanzo, even in supports i prefer zen over others due to that maybe Kiri before s9 garbage :wastebasket: patch

But that’s my playstyle like voldemort i prefer avada kedavaring my opponents and not be a weaksauce like dumblydoor throwing statues and being all flashy with zero substance wasting time and yapping nonsense.

Support doesn’t have venture echo or Sombra?

You don’t need to monitor two teams worth of health pools and can just focus on the kills?

You can do that with zen.

True, but you should still be throwing out the heal orb. This is probably telling about my skill level, but when I play Zen and I’m coming into a fight, I always have to weigh charging up a volley v. being ready to throw out the healing orb and save someone.

(With apologies for the MR references, but playing Scarlet Witch was a liberating experience for me. She’s the DPS Moira, and it was so amazing to be able to play without worrying about saving my teammates.)

You’re not target #1 for the entire enemy team for the full duration of any game you’re in.

You don’t have to watch people press ‘W’ into the enemy on less than half health when you just used all your cooldowns trying to keep them alive; only for them to die the second you have to reload, and have them blame you for ‘not healing.’

You get to damage stuff. Instead of heal/damage/provide grief counselling for the poor genji who is clearly having the worst game of his entire life.

Also, if you enjoy dealing damage, the role designed to secure those kills is definitely the role to aim for.

If, for any reason, playing support is more enticing to you: welcome to the club. We have a support group (no pun intended) for those of us who get subjected to the forums frequent saline-fuelled witch-hunts: it’s the entire roster.

I do but mostly it’s on targets i think will benefit most like active tanks or dive and forget and blast enemies, i do swap if someone in los is in danger especially other support outside that it’s mostly just dpsing :joy:

Im probably not a good support :joy:

This changed in ow2 dps are now the most easy kill targets

Tf are you talking about I just went against pocketed sojourn with 45-5 and 26.4k dmg

That isnt normal for any other hero in ow’s history, in a NORMAL length game holy

I used to do 60 elims plus more dmg in ow1

40-50 were normal good games for dps even on soldier.

The fact that a broken sojourna is required to squeeze out a 45 is telling how much the game has suffered from tankification pandemic

It’s not that they’re easy to kill, people just don’t peel for each other. And in certain elos DPS just get no hecking peel. With peeling, all things are possible. It’s a forgotten art isn’t it?

In comp maybe, not in qp. Think, think.

Comp games are roughly 25 mins long. That game was 10 mins and like 40 secs. If you wanted to do the ratio, in the same length of a comp game she’d have 112 elims and 61.5k dmg

Because playing DPS is fun.

If DPS queues become practically instant the way that tank queues are, then I’ll be worried and not before. Until then, there are clearly enough people enjoying the role.

You know what. There arent. Youre right. So dont pick dps. Play support. But you wont right. Because you already know what youre saying is wrong. Can you cut it with woe is me, I cant get a kill on a hero that can 2 tap but the 85dps with no hs multiplier the supports have is decent damage.
