Why pay for MTX when they could shut down OW2?

Yes, I know the terms of service says Blizzard can do what they like. Yes, I know the EULA says that Blizzard can do what they like. This is not a defense because we’re not debating what the EULA says.

Overwatch 2 will likely have expensive Microtransactions. Its foolish to say things like “we don’t know how their monetization scheme will be!” because we already know enough to make accurate assumptions. When you look at Diablo Immortal, you already get a rough understanding of what Blizzard is likely to do. My question is simple:

Why in the world should I pay for expensive skins and battle passes when you can just shut down the game on a whim?

This isn’t a problem unique to Blizzard mind you; but with Blizzard already doing this to OW1 (for entirely selfish reasons), I feel like Blizzard’s neck is on the chopping block here. I believe anyone who bought OW1 will still have OW1 cosmetics in OW2, and while that’s a great thing, its small comfort when you consider the rest of OW1 is still being deleted. This can easily happen to the cosmetics, too. What’s stopping them from saying “You’ll have to earn everything from scratch in OW2”? I know a lot of you here would put up with that.

Oh, and since people think bringing up the EULA is a valid defense for this behavior, let me copy and past my first three sentences again.

Yes, I know the terms of service says Blizzard can do what they like. Yes, I know the EULA says that Blizzard can do what they like. This is not a defense because we’re not debating what the EULA says.

Also, I remember hearing that EULAs might not be enforceable if challenged in court. I’m sure they matter since, you know, companies wouldn’t waste time drafting EULAs if they couldn’t at least potentially help, but remember you can’t always sign away your rights. Its likely that the EULA wouldn’t matter if enough people complained about something, so saying “Its in the EULA, so” isn’t an iron clad defense for anything.

Because the dopamine rush from progressing through the BP is pleasurable. I spend more on similarly dumb crap. I just paid $20 to replay GTA 4 because I couldn’t find my disc after searching for 20 minutes? I’ll probably find it tonight.

That’s still $20 for an entire multi hour game. I’d argue that’s more value than some battle pass or $30 skin.

$30 skins aren’t for me. Depending on the structure of the BP, I’ll be likely buying them.

Why watch the fireworks if they’ll fade away anyway?

Please tell me, with a straight face, honestly, what are the chances of a Triple A company like Blizzard doing such a BAD move, specially if they are making LOTS of money with OW2 ?

What do you think the odds are mate? Throw a % please.

Fireworks and digital media are two different things. Fireworks has to fade away, games “fade” because of the companies you’re bootlicking for.

I don’t know about Blizzard, but there has been companies that did something like this. Gearbox and Battle Born are perfect examples, though you might not accept that for some arbitrary reason.

Those guys lost their expensive MTX, and the same can happen with Blizzard.

Just because you dont like something doesn’t immediately mean anyone who doesn’t have a problem with it is a bootlicker.

I didn’t call them a bootlicker because I don’t like something, I did because the comparison of digital media to fireworks seems so bad faith to me that I can only assume this person just wants to defend blizzard.

It’s a multiplayer game, it will fade away unless you’re one of the very few major hits of the industry. That’s just how it works.

Heck, Ubisoft just shot down some Assassin’s Creed stuff they won’t DRM anymore, best of luck with that. It sucks but that’s why I suggest everyone buy their stuff on GOG whenever possible and download the .exe backups, even Steam can just go kaputs tomorrow.

Oh you clearly don’t know me, lol

Well…besides the obvious response of, why did you buy OW1 when they could just shut it down on a whim…when was the last time blizzard shut down a game? Even games they have completely abandoned (HOTS for instance) are still up and running.

Even that aside, another obvious response is that if you buy cosmetics, you will have them while the game is up and running. So…that’s why you would buy them.

It wasn’t a bad faith argument. Fireworks are consumable and can only be experienced for a limited time. Any kind of digital content that doesnt guarantee unlimited access forever should be treated in the same respect.

Right? It’s like, why should I go to a movie theater when I can’t watch the movie after it’s over. I mean … this is a silly thread.

You know, I ate some food today. It’s totally unfair that I can’t eat it again tomorrow

Games fading away is the natural tradeoff for having multiplayer exclusive titles and digital storefronts. If you dislike that then dont buy multiplayer games or use digital storefronts. Sometimes purchases dont last forever. Just take a look at literally any physical good you own.

I would like to point out that Blizzard at the very least keeps the lights on, even when they’ve stopped supporting a game. HotS, SCI, and SCII are basically all on that same life support mode. Lights are on, but no one will come home to touch it unless there’s a major bug.

All games get shut down eventually.

You could say that about any game, why specify OW2?

Well, you say that but your comments read like the same corporate defense/excuses that I usually get with people hyper focused on defending the honor of corporations, for example

“that’s just how it works”, but it obviously doesn’t have to. Is there any reason to put up with this sort of thing? People can easily emulate Overwatch 1 servers and play it forever, so if they can, Blizzard doesn’t have to just delete it.

You know there’s ways around this. And one more thing

I remember reading that Valve planned to make all of their games DRM free if steam went kaput. We probably don’t have to worry about losing our steam games any time soon.

In short, it doesn’t have to be “just how it works” if we don’t want it to be, but you seem content with the current gaming landscape. Content enough to compare fireworks to digital media that could live longer than us if it weren’t for the greedy corporations that you want to defend.

Yes, and digital media doesn’t have to have this restriction. Programs can be used forever by design.

Why? You two are just saying stuff with no real substance to it. Is there any reason that digital content that doesn’t expressly state “This project will never be shut down” should be treated like a firework? I want you to take a step back and realize what you just posted.

If you buy the DVD, you can watch the movie when its over! Just like when you buy a game, you should be able to play it when you want to!

Games are not food, what in the world is wrong with you guys? Games are not consumable; you don’t eat them or use them and not have them anymore. You have the files for Overwatch forever, and the only reason you can’t use them is because Blizzard said “No.”. Do you not see the difference here?
