That doesn’t make any sense.
If someone needs to switch to a defense character to defend a point, how will they know who to choose?
Guy 1: Hey, switch to a defense character to defend the payload.
Guy 2: Uh, Reaper will work, right?

You could argue that Defense, and Offense heros are damage dealers, but Defense heros are specifically designed to defend an area; Offense heroes are not.
This change doesn’t make sense, systematically, nor strategically.
They do damage.
Therefore they are all in one category.
That’s it.
Offense heroes can be pretty good on defense and defense heroes like Widowmaker, Hanzo, and Junkrat work well on offense it was clear that the categorization was poorly thought out. Would love to have a flank category tho.
Is their job to kill things? If yes, they are a damage hero.
A lot of “defense” heroes are more viable on offense and vice versa for the “offense” category.

Not gonna say that Paladins’ better, but hero categorization wise? Welp, they got that down pretty good.

I used to have the same misconception when I started playing this game, I used to think I should only use Offense players when attacking and Defense players with defending. It would seem as though they have advantages for their position but overall as long as you’re killing the other team, you’re bound to succeed.
I mean it also isn’t hard to do research of the hero’s kit where you can clearly tell if their kit is more of a defensive kit or offensive kit…just saying
Things to blame:
Junkrat being a “defense” when he’s clearly DPS.
Symmetra being support when she was also DPS before her changes made her even more DPS.
Blizzard doesn’t know how to label characters.
It’s because it’s gotten to the point where some attackers are working better for defense, some defenders working better for offense and some that work for both. The line between the two categories is getting blurred so they merged the two.
Doomfist works better on Defense
McCree has no mobility and thus would fit better on Defense
Junkrat, though better on Defense, is also good on Offense
Widowmaker and Hanzo both are better on Offense
The categories were arbitrary at best. Offense and Defense were both DPS characters and the separation made no sense.
just because they are considered defensive doesnt mean they are not meant to be a dps, I hope you know that, heroes you can deal high damage are all considered DPS

Also there wasn’t much a difference between the two classes anyway. They’re both DPS classes.
Reaper and Tracer are better at holding and stalling a point than Widow and Torb. Also you are right about their original intentions, but characters like Widow and Junk are very strong on attack, and McCree or Soldier are good on defense. You strictly defining these roles is kinda why they’re merging them lol
In their own words, the lines between defense and offense were becoming too blurred. Some dps are better on attack over defense and vice versa, but overall you can run any dps on either mode and have a good chance to win if you play right (including Reaper on defense).
I’m not sure what you’re getting at with this reply, because I literally said both of those heroes are considered defensive but should be DPS.
Junk and Sym can do high damage, so yes, should be DPS. What are you correcting me on here?

To simplify it for the new LFG system and because there really wasn’t much of a difference between the 2 categories in the first place. Defense heroes are not necessarily better at defending than some of the offense heroes.
