I play only Open queue and if you want to check I give you my profile, it’s already public in the game, and I’ve probably never played a game with 4 tanks. Most of the times is 2-1-2 or the usual 1-2-2. If you get strange composition it’s probably because you’re playing in a lower skill level match making. And this is the fact of why I never had problems with the original state of the game, from 2016 release to 2019 when it died for me, with role lock.
I’ve played OQ up to diamond and it is the biggest elitist tank and support dominant hell hole ever. You get berated, reported and threatened when playing dps.
People would just leave games constantly if they had to play Tank. They should do a min2 but only for the DPS role to help keep gross GOAT-y metas from forming tho
I play only quick play yes, open queue. I dropped ranked back in season 10 (OW 1), so years ago, probably 2018-2019. I’ve always been in diamond, so the avg skill level is from like platinum to grand-master/top 500. That’s what i always got while playing in quick play in ow1, in ow2 it’s all hidden, but more or less we’re there around low diamond.
In ranked yeah, i can believe people force you to play tanks, because tanks are broken in this game and should get reverted back to ow1 levels. They have less health in op, but still have a lot of abilities and stuff that weren’t there back then. One of the reason 5v5RL for me is literally unplayable are the boss tanks. The 2-2-2 6v6 test, felt off because tanks are still broken. Somehow this min 1 max 3 plays much better. Still, tanks are the problem in this game. They have to Tank, not to Tank and do more damage than a dps. You want this game to have role? Apply the roles. Otherwise everything blands in a dps group, everything is a dps, and people choose the best dps, in this case OP tanks.
Remember how I said T500 starts in diamond? That means that there are only 500 players in each region that are diamond and above. Open queue peaks at about mid master, if that. The vast majority of the OQ playerbase is mid metal ranks.
The ave skill level of OQ is closer to gold and nowhere near diamond or even masters.
You can’t apply ranked play logic to unranked modes. How on earth can you say “oh you must be in low ranked lobbies compared to my lobbies” if you aren’t even playing ranked?? OQ quickplay is essentially silver/gold/plat games with a couple of diamond players sprinkled in here and there.
In terms of competitive play. It is the most toxic and limiting environment to play anything other than support or tank as a “mainstream” mode.
Edit: apologies if I come across as rude or unpleasant, that is not my intention. Reading it back made me think twice about my wording.
Right, because 3-1-2 is the most OP/broken comp and will be the most common in competitive. But if they had min1/max243 then the most common comps would likely be 222, 213 and 231 which reduces the number of extreme comps and removes 3 tanks as the always being the strongest approach.
Alternately, since there is little reason to pick DPS over supports with so many supports being just as good at DPS as DPS, you could go min1/max242.
Allowing 3 tanks is a bad idea in any mode.
I spend almost all of my time in role-less queue mode, and no, this is not the team composition all of the time…in fact, I dont think I have seen this composition at all in role-less queue mode.
I am sure it happens occasionally, but absolutely not in every match
There is no good reason to allow 3 tanks. It makes balancing tanks harder as you now have to assume there could be 3 on 1 team, it potentially forces players to play the least popular role if they want to win, and it does nothing for queue times, which is the reason for min1 instead of 222 (allowing min1 tank is what helps queue times and not having RQ - allowing 3 tanks instead of 2 does not help further and 2 tanks seems to be what people want ideally).
Current full open formats allow 5-6 tanks, so having 3 as the limit is the lesser of the open format evils. I do agree that 2 tanks max is probably the easiest way to go, but leaving a 3rd support or 3rd DPS as an option always keeps things interesting.
The easiest way to lessen any role’s impact is to reduce their health and damage numbers, so if Blizz really wants to push 2-2-2 but use open queues to reduce wait queue times, then they could impose a performance “nerf” to whichever roles have 3+ total players. Just food for thought…
