Why is this game so hard to climb?

Literally that. I understand the devs dont want smurfs to dominate but honestly. EVERYONE in my bronze games are playing and shooting shots like I see on twitch or youtube, like really good postioning gameplay. BUT they’re still in bronze. I’lll watch a mcree hit like 5 or 6 player kill streak, but we still end up losing. The only way you gain SR is by winning, so I could still be doing literally 4k damage and 8 or 9k healing and still not win. Why is it like this? like is silver just soooooo much better? No because I was also in silver and gold and literally felt and saw no gameplay difference except going on a losing streak after I started playing just after a patch. WHICH BTW DONT DO. Thats apparently when all the smurfs come to town to either wreck or throw. I understand their are kind of measures to help get your account banned if you’re doing these type of things, but honestly, it doesnt change anything. Matchmaking is just HORRIBLE. It should be based off of stats, like avg amount of kills/ avg amount of heals, but instead its based on whether you win or not. Which is so arbitrary it makes the game SO UNFUN. I wont play this game again. I hope this company goes bankrupt.

The inconvenient truth … match making isn’t that bad and won’t stop you climbing.

Fixating on stats will however.

If you post on these forums, expect WetWipe / Smallpackage and his million aliases to post some trolling reply defending blizzard regardless.

I find it funny that the pinned thread to post says ‘the purpose [of this forum] is to discuss game-winning strategies’. With the matchmaking being this bad for over a year now, the only real game-winning strategy is to not play OW anymore. You will feel a lot happier for it. That’s what I did.

Just another chump obsessed with me and thinking I have unlimited accounts (despite naming the only 2 I use)

Are you Lazarus in disguise…

I think posting in the any forum won’t do anything. I have come to the conclusion that they have hired a new team of muppets to “bring something new to the game” and in the process they have broken it and can’t fix it.

The best thing you can do is abuse the report option but when you report a player blame Blizzard. That way you know someone from Blizzard is reading how much people are hating what has happened to the game.

Friends telling me they win two lose 3, win three lose 2. Seems the game is keeping them in the 50-55% range. Pretty much what people have been saying. They are Platinum and Diamond players. The “program” will give you a potato or two. Seems like every game for me.

Jeff Kaplan along with the Lead Hero Designer from OW1 did quit at the start (or before launch) of OW2. Ever since then, every new hero release and updates have been going downhill tbh.

They win 2, MMR goes up a little. Play better players, lose 3, MMR drops, they win MMR goes and so on.

There’s nothing forcing or keeping anyone there. They are just playing in lobbies around their skill level.

The matchmaker is completely broken, I can tell you by experience it’s more difficult to get out of some lower tiers than it is to advance at higher tiers, which is absolutely busted.

The algorithms are clearly bogus based on many facts, one of which is when you have completely terrible teammates and lose and it’s called a “reversal,” or on the other side, a complete blowout where the other team was awful and it’s called an “uphill battle.” Whatever they’re doing in the background is completely F’d.

Nah, you mean play with worse players against better players. You shouldn’t have the highest kills and lowest deaths while your teammates were decimated with negative K/D+stats, and the game says you should have one that. The algo put you there to lose.

Everyone in the lobby has same/similar MMR. So it is what it is, the game sees you as equals. Get on with it.

My point is that the game is terrible at describing an equal. I enjoy close games where there are losses. I get that you have to play quite a bit to climb, but I still know that the MM sucks at its job often.

The suckiness of it is amplified even bigger this season due to the tank changes.

It isn’t. You just don’t like MMR. Which is fair enough.

Don’t we all. Match maker can’t make them happen though. Just as it can’t make it one sided.

All it does it picks 10 people who are queuing at the moment within he same MMR range. That’s it.

The tank changes did seem really crap. But the hot fix seems to have resolved a few of the issues. It’s quite a good patch now. Not the best, but it’s a good enough spot. (maybe quite good is over egging it a little. it isn’t bad.)

The matchmaker doesn’t work well because it doesnt take individual contribution into account. When you have throwers (soft or hard) or smurfs that act as server admins for a game, the rating system should be good enough to identify those outliers and not adjust everyone else’s SR, as those games aren’t indicative of a match at that rank. Ideally, it would end the game early so people wouldn’t waste their time, but it might be hard to tell until pretty late in a game if someone is actually playing at a different skill level.

There’s also the losses given when a teammate DCs, even when you were winning before the DC, which is really irritating. If theres no reason to believe that one team was significantly more likely to win, you shouldn’t count it against the team with the leaver.

To be clear though, the matchmaker is not out to get you or force a 50-50. Its just not good at rating people, leading to matches essentially being random (i.e. 50% chance to win) unless you are god tier or total trash.

You can’t “climb” in comp. It’s a lottery. You will lose a match, and it’s not always your fault. You can be stuck in a rank simply because the matchmaking system isn’t working and 4 other people are bringing you down. To get higher up you have to be at least one league above where you are now or, and the most common, get placed with the right people.

This game is 25% skill, 75% luck. Simps will be mad, but that’s the truth.

Stats are misleading. I’ve lost games where everyone on my team did better but enemy team had the choke and held the objective longer. I’d certainly expect that to happen a lot in Bronze.

The truth is that you have to get better at the game. That’s the only way you’ll rank up. I agree it’s not easy. It also takes time. Don’t worry about the rank. It doesn’t matter. Focus on doing better.

You see them hit shots like the people on twitch/yt sure. But it’s also easier to hit shots on lower ranked players. To hit the same shot in higher ranks you have to:

  1. Find an enemy you could realistically kill with everyone having better, safer positioning.

  2. Get into a position to hit the shot, where a single misstep will get you killed.

  3. Account for the enemies strafing and unpredictable movement which will be leagues better in higher ranks.

  4. Hit the shot (likely only getting one chance since the enemies will react to you shooting).

You also can’t forget about the season 9 hitbox changes, which makes it so pretty much anyone can consistently hit shots on a player with poor movement.
