Why is it called moth Meta?

I’m just curious why is the Mercy patch from the rework called moth meta? Is it to insult her? Why not the butterfly meta? Is it because a moth invokes more negative feeling than a butterfly? Heck a butterfly, fairy, or angel all invoke better imagery but moth seems to be negative. I was around for the original patch and didn’t get it then either but now I must ask.

Back when Mercy was a competitive hero, she flew around extremely fast, like a moth. Always in your face and darting around.

Mainly because Mercy has a small body and big wings (in her ult) and is as fragile as an insect, while being very annoying to deal with at the time. Thats why it was “Moth” and not “Butterfly” meta. It was for depicting how bad the meta was, while in reality it was the most divers meta ever.

Today its just a term for a time when Mercy got the rework and her ult was actually an ult. Broken, but had impact. Never knew why they removed the fire rate increase or the faster flying. The rez reset and instant rez was broken, but the rest was just… fun and exiting.

She still is a competitive hero, just not the end all be all that she was in moth.

Basically she flying around everywhere. Like a fly around pooh, and just as infuriating as that fly. I took great pleasure in blowing her out the sky with Junkrat

Now I call her a moth because the Mercy’s I see will fly into the light (allied soul) and die to rez them. No thoughts, just soul.

It’s like a bug zapper.

Not really. kitsune was a delete key, sojourn was a machine gun sniper, the first OW2 grand finals was insane to watch. frog and fox were pretty common then. Heroes across the board were slowed down a lot in terms of speed, with power creep being favored for a more death-matchy COD style we have today.

Kitsune takes a lot longer to build then VALK and can be spaced out if your not neck deep into the fight.

The machine gun part is projectile not hitscan, it’s not exactly conistent at hitting air borne or fast moving targets.

OWC/L isn’t ladder, we have top 500 mercy’s and the like. She can do work up their.

was it not named after moth? the support player?

Why do they call it xbox 360?
Because when you see one, you do a 360 and walk away.

I kinda just assumed it was how big and bright yellow her wings are. And moths being drawn to light might be the imagery that first came to mind.

Fwiw it’s also the fastest projectile in the game by a large margin - it’s like 160 mps. As long as you’re not shooting at a pharah across the map, it’s still pretty consistent against flying heroes.

Also cause the player who got famous for it called himself moth.

its hilarious how some people will always talk with confidence about something they have no idea if its true or not and some people will believe them

Since OW2 is a glorified shop update, she’s very competitive in that you can buy lots of new skins for her!

:money_mouth_face:

85% of ppl here are talking pure nonsense rn.

The reason it was called Moth Meta was because she was super super fast in Valk and would constantly look to rez every kill.

  • Super fast flying Mercy
  • Mercy chasing souls of dead allies with OP rez (like a light/flame that would attract a moth)
    = Moth Meta

It’s just that simple.

And no, it was not because if Moth the OWL player or whatever.

I looked it up and found the answer: What was Moth Meta? - General Discussion - Overwatch Forums

Although they dont explain the “moth” metaphor, they do described what the state of Mercy was back then (and will be in the near future).

Because moths always hang around light sources (the same way mercy always hangs around pharah) and they move in a similar manner to mercy.

Every time i hear that term i think of an old cartoon show called “The Tick” and a funny superhero in a moth suit named Arthur

Because Mercy had incredibly high movement speed in Valkyrie, on its release, combined with being the first hero to have omni-directional flight, leading her to flit about like a moth would. People weren’t used to fighting a hero whilst having to take into consideration the Z-Axis, and Mercy could easily abuse that.

And she was annoying to deal with, like moths are. You rez, which was instant, pop Valk and get a second rez for free. Wait 10 seconds, and you’ve got another, then another 10 for a 4th, as Valkyrie had a 20 second duration back then, and by the time it’s finished, you have a 5th. And good luck catching her during Valkyrie, when she had the power to gun you down from a mile away, thanks to getting projectiles so fast they might as well have made her hitscan with no falloff or recoil, with higher damage and firerate.

Damn, what a time to be alive.
