I never got this.
If you instalock, you know exactly who and what you want to play for that map. You pick first, so you don’t have to fill/arent expected to fill. And its not like you can’t just…switch off later if your pick isn’t working out.
Not everybody is equally competent across all heroes and roles. Not everybody can fill and do well.
Honestly, I see people who instalock as people who know what their strengths are and play to them.

who ever said that instalocking is bad?
One tricking MIGHT be bad, but that’s all!

Lots of people complain about it, especially for off-meta picks.

They are also often people who play what they want to play, will never switch off, and refuse to work with the team.
I don’t care if your pick is off meta, but at least switch if it’s costing your team the game or work with the team in a way that makes your pick work.

Instalocking isn’t bad.
Being the last to pick and picking a fourth DPS is bad.

People like to complain a lot in Overwatch. I just let people play what they want for the first few teamfights and then if it’s not working I’ll ask for changes, no reason to start tilting your entire team over nothing while you’re in the spawn.

I stopped instalocking heroes I was good at because it felt kind of rude I guess, but then, multiple times, people would start instalocking those heroes and I ended up playing someone I wasn’t so great at.
Yeah…
because it makes you look like you don’t care about team comp and also you may be stealing a character from someone who is better with that character.
Instalocking tells me one of two things.
Either you have a plan for the map and are good at the hero you picked so you’re confident you can win with your pick.
Or, you’re not even trying to work with your team to build a solid composition and don’t care at all about strategy, basically saying that you’ve already picked and now want the other five players to work around you.
I like to think the best of people so I’ll usually assume the former. I’m a tank/healer filler anyway so I like to sit back and let people pick what they want so I can determine what the best pick would be based on what we already have. I just wish more people would adopt the same attitude and actually communicate with their team about strategy and team composition before instalocking so the other members don’t feel pressured into picking based on others picks.
My experience with instalocks is they usually are by people who think they are amazing, but in reality, aren’t.
I think it’s bad to instalock because you’re basically saying “here, I’m playing this. So you have to pick around me because I’m not gonna tell you if I’ll switch”.
It’s okay in quick play, because everyone just wants to learn heroes and have fun there. But when you’re in comp, you shouldn’t instalock.
Its so obvious, you’re a bad person unless you wait 2.4 seconds to pick, haven’t your mom ever taught you that
well, somebody has to pick first. What’re you “supposed” to do then?

Picking first is fine. Picking first isn’t necessarily instalocking.
Most instalocks I see are usually one-tricks, and they’re not good for the team. So that’s probably why.
Especially in lower ranks where a lot of people strictly go after people who pick hanzo, genji, widow, bastion, or torb
You guys need to stop focusing on what your teammates are doing and focus on yourself, you’ll climb, trust me.
If you wanna be shotcaller when the comp doesn’t work, be my guest but don’t start judging people based on the number of seconds they took to click on a button or what they picked.
Disagree. They’re both bad, but the person who went first and instalocked a DPS is no worse than the person who chose a DPS last. You shouldn’t get to play DPS just because you clicked faster/ have a faster connection or whatever.
The only honorable way to play overwatch is to not pick a hero and just play who you’re spawned as.
